AC Current Transformers or Current Sensors
A current transformer is a type of transformer that is usually placed in the main circuit to step down a high current circuit to drive a low current device, usually a low current meter or resistor.
The primary winding current is essentially made up of three components; the loss current that supplies iron and copper loss, the magnetizing current that establishes the flux in the core and the load current.
If high accuracy current transformer is needed, the loss and magnetizing current need to be kept as low as possible so that the secondary current will truly reflect the primary current which is also the current to be measured or sensed.

 current transformer
A typical application of current transformers is the current control of heater bands or heating groups at extrusion systems, injection moulding machines or other machines where heating is an important parameter for product quality.
The current transformer is connected to the measuring instrument by binders (+) and (-).
Current transformers are suitable for monophase or threephase current.

 Toroidal Current Transformers
The term “toroidal” refers to the shape of the core that the winding of a toroidal current transformer is wound on.
In contrast, the term “split-core” in split-core current transformers is used because the transformer core is split into two pieces which allow it to be assembled and disassembled around a buss bar without disconnecting either end of the buss bar.
In application, the toroidal current transformer is slipped over an end of a high current wire or buss bar, which conducts the primary current.

Transimpedance Amplifier Buffers Current Transformer - Maxim/Dallas
Technically, the terms differ: a transimpedance amp delivers an output voltage that is a function of the input current; conversely, a transconductance amp converts a voltage to a current.
Current transformers are not only a convenient means for current measurement in many applications, but also provide isolation while absorbing very little power from the source.
Thus, connecting a current transformer to the input shorts that summing node directly to ground, causing the output (VOUT) to equal the input offset multiplied by the amplifier's open-loop gain.

Transformer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ratio of the currents in the primary and secondary circuits is inversely proportional to the turns ratio.
That is, the ratio between the primary and secondary currents is the inverse of the ratio between the corresponding voltages.
In the latter case, the transformer's secondary is resonated with the cable's capacitance.

Current transformers,Voltage transformers and Instrument transformers:India
Their role in electrical systems is of primary importance as they are a means of "stepping down" the current or voltage of a system to measurable values, such as 5A or 1A in the case of a current transformers or 110V or 100V in the case of a voltage transformer.
In a "practical" transformer, errors are introduced because some current is drawn for the magnetization of the core and because of drops in the primary and secondary windings due to leakage reactance and winding resistance.
Their performance is defined in terms of a knee-point voltage (KPV), the magnetizing current (Imag) at the knee point voltage or 1/2 or 1/4 the knee-point voltage, and the resistance of the CT secondary winding corrected to 75C.

 Current Transformer Measurements
The current error is the error which a transformer introduces into the measurement of a current and which arises from the fact that the actual transformation ratio is not equal to the rated transformation ratio
If i is the nominal secondary current and a and b are respectively the errors of the comparator and the test transformer secondary currents, the compensation winding current is (i + a) - (i + b) which is equal to (a - b).
Routine current transformer calibrations can be carried out over a large range of primary to secondary current ratios, generally to rated secondary currents of 1 A and 5 A. Measurements are made at defined frequencies, burdens and power factors according to the customer's requirements.

Transconductance Amplifier Buffers Current Transformer - Maxim/Dallas
Current transformers, which offer a convenient means for current measurement in many applications, also provide isolation while absorbing very little power from the source.
The output current from a current transformer can be converted to voltage with a resistor of a suitable value, but that approach can dramatically reduce the transformer's high frequency response.
These forms of the transconductance amplifier are useful for inputs that closely resemble an ideal current source, as does (for example) a photo-diode preamplifier, but they are not suitable for use with a current transformer.

A current transformer design   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In linear current transformers there are generally air gaps in the iron core to reduce the time constant and remanence.
These are auxiliary current transformers in which a small air gap is included in the core to produce a secondary voltage output proportional in magnitude to current in the primary winding.
Sometimes termed ´transactors´ or ´quadrature current transformers´, this form of current transformer has been used as an auxiliary component of unit protection schemes in which the outputs into multiple secondary circuits must remain linear for and proportioned to the widest practical range of input currents.

 Transformer - HvWiki
This is accomplished using a current transformer (CT), a "donut" (toroidal) shaped core through which is threaded the wire whose current is to be measured.
Current transformers are designed to produce either an alternating current or alternating voltage proportional to the current being measured.
These transformers use a tank circuit composed of a high-voltage resonant winding and a capacitor to produce a nearly constant average output with a varying input.

Current Transformers Toroidal Split Core Transformers
Since it is used to measure current, a current transformer is often classified as a type of instrument transformer.
A current transformer can accurately measure the alternating current and put out a reasonable voltage, which is proportional to the current, but without as much heat and size that an appropriate resistor would require.
Split core current transformers are designed so that they can be assembled around a buss bar without disconnecting the buss bar.

Residual-current device - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A residual current device (RCD), or residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), is an electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the flow of current is not balanced between the phase ("hot") conductor and the neutral conductor.
RCDs operate by measuring the current balance between two conductors using a differential current transformer, and opening the device's contacts if there is a balance fault (i.e.
Residual current detection is complementary to, rather than a replacement for, conventional over-current detection, as residual current detection cannot provide protection for faults which do not involve an external leakage current, for example faults that pass the current directly from one side of the circuit through the victim to the other.

 Current-Doubler Rectifier Reduces Ripple Current
Also, a finer resolution in the transformer turns ratio is possible since the two secondaries of the full-wave rectifier are replaced with a single secondary winding in a current-doubler application.
However, because the volt-seconds applied to the transformer primary must be equal for each half of the power-transfer cycle, the current doubler is limited to a maximum duty cycle of 50% per phase.
The transformer turns ratio deserves attention as it has direct effect upon the amount of output ripple-current cancellation that can be achieved.
