The Currie Cup tournament is South Africa's premier domestic rugby union competition, featuring teams representing either entire provinces or substantial regions within provinces.
The inaugural Currie Cup tournament was held in 1892 with Western Province as the first winners.
Currie Cup heroes like Faffa Knoetze, Calla Scholtz and steam-rolling wing Neil Burger insured the trophy remained in the shadow of Table Mountain for a further four years before again heading north.

In fact the Currie Cup of 1998 was one of the great ones, a stirring competition that brought the crowds, surfeited by Super 12, Tri-Nations and other internationals, flocking back to rugby with cheerful and passionate enthusiasm.
Normally you would expect the Currie Cup to be contested by four major unions Western Province, who have won the coveted trophy most frequently, the Blue Bulls, who have won the second most frequently, Natal, who have had a great run in the Nineties, and the Golden Lions, formerly Transvaal.

SA Rugby Pty Ltd's board of directors agreed in principle to accept a revised proposal for the 2003 Currie Cup competition whereby two teams earlier consigned to first division rugby for the next two years have a chance of being included in a new Top Eight competition.
The Board was unanimous in its acceptance of an adjustment, which earlier in the year had restructured the existing 14-team Currie Cup competition into a Top Six and Bottom Eight divisional split.
None of the Springboks in the Rugby World Cup squad of 30 will participate in the Currie Cup and therefore no promotion or relegation will be applicable.
