Topic: Curses (computer game)

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

 [No title]
It does so in such a beautiful way, always keeping the game open and making the player the center of the game-world, so that it is the player who writes the story; it is he who synchronizes the unbelievable chain of events.
It is one of the few games where the puzzles and riddles actually enhance the atmosphere and enrich the dramatic content of the narative than threaten it.
Curses is not a game to be solved in a couple of hours.

Curses (computer game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Curses is an interactive fiction computer game created by Graham Nelson in 1993.
The player takes the part of a young English aristocrat, who in the course of searching the attic for an old tourist map of Paris steps into a surreal adventure to uncover a curse that has been placed on the family.

 Palm Games: Interactive fiction
If you're a personal computing veteran, you may remember a type of computer game called "interactive fiction." These were written stories in which you interacted with, and changed, the story by telling the main character what to do.
The game installation process is slightly involved; you need to know how to put the files in the appropriate directory on your memory card.
For some of the games, there are also text files giving hints on how to solve the puzzles.

Now the game has been delayed and rebuilt to emerge as a game with the potential to be the next mega-hit.
Microprose’s Magic: The Gathering the computer game is based upon a trading card game of the same name which is the property of Wizards of the Coast (www.wizards.com).
This is a game that many take as serious as chess, there are innumerable tournaments and a multiplayer game would allow players from all over the world to compete with people more near their skill level.

Introduction to UI programming with curses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Curses knows the capabilities of each terminal emulator, and will use those capabilities transperantly to further reduce flicker by using high-level operations implemented by the terminal to commit the changes where possible.
One of the features curses provides is to notify the terminal emulator to provide characters from directly to the application (reading standard input only via curses, hopefully), so that it can do full-screen applications which respond immediately to key presses.
So, to give a curses program an ability to multiplex without using threading, it is enough to replace getchar with simple call to select against the 0 file descriptor and whatever other connections or files that need to be read from or written too.

 Review: Curses
It's one of those games which'll be remembered by future generations as one of the defining games of its era.
The game can be taken as a humorous slice-of-life type of text adventure for much of the early going - the perceived "curses" and dream sequences could be all taken as part of the humor rather than as serious concerns that the player must analyze carefully.
The game is designed in such a way that is pleasing but yet quite indicative of the time in which it was made.

The Sims Bustin' Out for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 The Sims Bustin' Out Review
The second game in the series for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, The Sims Bustin' Out, successfully expands on the previous game, not only by letting you make a more highly customized computerized person (or "sim"), but also by letting your sims "bust out" of their own homes and freely visit their neighbors.
The new game's bust out mode is at once more cohesive and more varied than that of the previous game, and it certainly gets tougher as you progress.
Bustin' Out presents the workday in the same way the PC games did: That is, your sims are required to work at certain hours of the day, during which they simply disappear from the game for several hours, only to return home later, more tired and more hungry than they were before they left.

In "Curses," the various modes of time/space/reality travel separate the scenes, while the theme of the Meldrew family holds them together to some extent; and in "Jigsaw," the framing device is quite literally the frame (and pieces) of the magical jigsaw puzzle.
Game designers would rather spend time coding a variety of locations than implementing every second-string solution to a problem like the banana one, where the most likely solution is indeed the chimp's way.
Even today, few IF games have managed to present a protagonist whose actions are completely defined by his or her own character, rather than by the objects-and-puzzles intrigues of the game.

Home of the Underdogs - Entry: Magic: The Gathering
One of the best computer translation of a non-computer games ever made, MicroProse's Magic: The Gathering not only deserves a Hall of Fame status for its faithful rendition of Wizard of the Coast's blockbuster trading card game of the same name, but also for the numerous innovations that are only possible as a computer game.
This computer game version, in contrast to the horrendous BattleMage game from Acclaim which is based on the same license, truly brings all the fun and subtleties of the card game to life via an elegant point-and-click interface and excellent graphics that does justice to the cards' original intricate artwork.
The game also introduces a new concept of gems: which are difficult to obtain, but can be used as currency to trade for powerful, permanent artifacts that enhance your wizard's power (for instance, magical boots that lets him walk quicker than normal).
