Over the next year, Cursive released both a split 10" with Austin's Silver Scooter (also on Crank!), and yet another 7" entitled "Disruption." The latter record began the band's extensive future with Saddle Creek, and in November of 1998, the label released the group's second full-length, The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song.
Cursive returned in 2001 with the EP Burst and Bloom, which added cellist Gretta Cohn to the band's lineup.
Cursive was also featured on the first 7" in Makato Recordings' year-long monthly 7" series.

 opinionated assholes / music sucks
This is Cursive being the kind souls they are and putting hard to find 7-inch singles in one convenient place, for a reasonable price, and with an awesome booklet that has the best art this side of someplace with really great art.
Cursive's career is kind of like wine, and no, this isn't a crack about alcoholism, although maybe it should be: they started out as rotting grape juice, and turned into something drinkable.
Rather than focus on the painfully-detailed decay of relationships, this time around Cursive is more interested in the actual business of writing songs: the motives, ideas and repercussions behind exposing all those private moments.

At this point Cursive toured extensively with many bands who they inspired and were inspired by including At The Drive, The Dismemberment Plan, Murder City Devils, The Faint, and Planes Mistaken for Stars.
I think that it is important for anyone who is making art or music or a house, that they are self-critical, so they know what they are doing.
I read somewhere that they decided that Cursive was too good musically and that they couldn't compete, so The Faint decided to go into an electronic direction.

Cursive formed in Omaha in 1995 when Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar), Matt Maginn (bass, vocals), and Steve Pedersen (guitar, vocals), who had been playing together for years in other bands, asked Clint Schnase to join them on drums.
Cursive was disbanded on the brink of releasing their second full-length release.
Cursive's combination of melody and technical madness continued and met up with a cello on Burst and Bloom (Saddle Creek - 2001), a five song EP that not only reflected the usual intensity and also introduced a new aspect (and member) of the band.

Cursive: Burst and Bloom - PopMatters Music Review
Cursive ranks right with the rest of the Saddle Creek bands (Bright Eyes, The Faint, Son Ambulance, etc.) as far as creativity goes, but have their own unique sound, one not only unlike their labelmates, but unlike just about anyone else.
Built in part on punk rock energy and post-punk artfulness, Cursive's sound also has pop melody, ambient sound, surrealism and a sense of melancholy, plus a somewhat experimental approach to song structure and, with the recent addition of cellist Gretta Cohn to theeir line-up, beautiful string arrangements.
The otherworldliness of some of Cursive's lyrics is complemented by music that capitalizes on the surprise factor to go into a variety of earthly and unearthly directions.

Echo Online :: Features :: Band Cursive boasts unique music, personalities
Cursive, in addition to practically all of its Saddle Creek Records label-mates, has been enjoying an obscene amount of publicity as of late.
Cursive and Kasher upped the ante once again in 2003, this time with "The Ugly Organ." While musically their most cohesive and creative work, the album's true appeal rests within its left-of-center subject matter.
Both songs are taken from Cursive's split release with Japan's Eastern youth entitled "8 teeth to eat you." Last year, Cursive was forced to cancel their tour with Eastern Youth before its scheduled completion, after Kasher suffered a collapsed lung.

Reflecting his (and his bandmates’) desire to continually challenge themselves, The Ugly Organ comes across as one of the most aggressively self-reflexive albums to be released in awhile.
It isn’t anything new for Cursive to comment on "the reality of popular music" and its audience, but this time they take things a step beyond comfort.
It also echoes the phrase “The worst is over…” at the end, which occurs again in the final song, “Staying Alive.” From a slow and angelic entrance, the song (and album) slowly builds into a climatic finish where instruments blur and only the phrase is recognized.

At the time Cursive was supporting a split EP with Eastern Youth called 8 Teeth To Eat You, but now they’re supporting their new full-length The Ugly Organ.
The album hadn’t been released to the masses yet, but Cursive was there to give them a taste of what they were bound to engulf.
I think it was mid-set when Cursive finally tore into “A Gentleman Caller” (one of many songs that featured harsh cello lines), and a couple passionate grooves caused Kasher to clinch his fist and nearly beat it against his head in time to the music.

Anguish is such common currency in the indie rock world, it seems like a statement of the obvious to use the word to describe a band.
Cursive's anguish isn't all wet and droopy and miserable, it's snarled and gnarled and hard and fl, it's articulately self-loathing, it's self-aware, it's harrowing like a bad dream.
That same year, Cursive appeared on a 10-inch split with Austin's Silver Scooter, which features "Pulse." In '98, the band released The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song, after which rumors of the band's breakup abounded.

This album takes the standard Cursive dynamic (jagged guitars, yelping, screaming, banging, rocking) and takes it away from where it was in their prior releases (somewhat, I think, due to the loss and replacement of Steve Pederson by Ted Stevens).
