Slide rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The slide rule (often nicknamed a "slipstick") is a mechanical analog computer, consisting of at least two finely divided scales (rules), most often a fixed outer pair and a movable inner one, with a sliding window called the cursor.
Despite their similar appearance, a slide rule serves a purpose different from that of a standard ruler: a ruler measures physical distances and aids in drawing straight lines, while a slide rule performs mathematical operations by using distances on nonlinearly-divided scales.
A slide rule tends to moderate the fallacy of "false precision" and significance.

 Slide Rule Dating
On early rules the serial numbers were usually on the rule in two places, the end of the slide and the bottom edge of the frame.
The slides and frame were cut from the same piece of stock and for best stability over the life of the rule they should be mated together in final assembly.
Prior to 1924, mating of the rule parts was through the use of numbers stamped into the end of the rules on both the frame and the slide.

It is unwise to attempt to clean a rule that is more than 50 years old, unless you are quite comfortable with the process, as the rule may be quite fragile, and the cursor in particular may be easily damaged by careless work.
If it is a duplex rule like the 4081, you may not wish to remove the cursor, and you can slide a piece of white paper under the glass, and gently press on the glass, while moving the cursor along it.
If it is a duplex rule like the Deci-lon or 4181, you may not wish to remove the cursor, and you can slide a piece of white paper under the glass, and gently press on the glass, while moving the cursor along it.

That is because the advantages of the circular slide rule applied to people new to slide rules and to slide rules with a limited number of scales, while the advantages of the straight slide rule were relevant to people who were trying to calculate rapidly and to slide rules with a large number of scales.
Marks at the two ends of that sleeve constituted the cursor of the slide rule; thus, instead of placing the two helical scales in coincidence, points on the two scales separated by the distance between the two cursor marks were treated as corresponding.
The first slide rule with a scale the length of which was a multiple of the length of the rule itself, to permit more precise calculations to be performed, was proposed by William Nicholson in 1787.

 Commercial slide rules
It includes trig scales, with a sine scale on both the slide and the stock and which would rarely be needed for commercial calculations, but does not have any log-log scales for compound interest calculations.
as is normal on general purpose slide rules but not particularly relevant for commercial rules, however the cursor has special lines to enable multiplication by 360 or 365.
Apart from the fact that the rule is folded at 360 and the scales have labelling (with German initial letters) suitable for business there is little to distinguish it from other rules.

If there's no link associated with a rule, that probably just means i haven't gotten round to scanning it in yet (in the case of the two 20" KandE rules, they were just too darn big to fit on the scanner, so i didn't even bother saying anything about them.
Anyway: Most of the pictures show the front and back of the rule, except where the back of the rule wasn't worth seeing or i was too lazy to scan both sides of the rule.
if you're looking for slide rules, i'd suggest starting at flea markets, garage sales, and antique stores near you; even antique stores frequently have extremely affordable slide rules (it's rarely necessary to spend more than $40 to get a good rule; they can usually be found for $20 or less).
