Curtis Roads is best known as the author of several landmark texts on computer music and as former editor of the prestigious Computer Music Journal (MIT Press).
Roads spent two years creating Half Life and describes it as portraying “a virtual world in which sounds are born and die in an instant or emerge in slow motion.” This description fits well with the synthesis approach Roads used, called pulsar synthesis — a technique that bears much in common with granular synthesis.
Roads applies meticulous control to each grain's spatial location, and though the work is presented in stereo on his CD, it is easily adapted to more complex sound systems.

Curtis Roads' 'The Computer Music Tutorial' is a comprehensive text and reference that covers all aspects of computer music, including digital audio, synthesis techniques, signal processing, musical input devices, performance software, editing systems, algorithmic composition, MIDI, synthesizer architecture, system interconnection, and psychoacoustics.
In 'The Music Machine', editor Curtis Roads brings together 53 classic articles published in Computer Music Journal between 1980 and 1985, providing a cohesive and comprehensive survey of the major developments in computer music and related technology during the early 1980s.
Roads has written an overview of each of the book's seven parts, highlighting the major topics and placing the various articles in a thematic and historical context.

In chapters 5 and 6, Roads delves into the rich possibilities of transforming existing sounds through granulation, first with simple grains (chapter 5) and then with grains derived from a windowed spectrum analysis using phase vocoder and wavelet techniques (chapter 6).
Roads focuses mostly on his own compositions and ideas, which is understandable but eventually a bit disappointing.
Roads ends chapter 9 with a brief summary of his ideas and describes how he feels granular-sound ideas might be used in the future.
