  Curtis T. McMullen
Curtis T. McMullen has been awarded a medal primarily in recognition of his work in the fields of geometry and "complex dynamics," a branch of the theory of dynamic systems, better known perhaps as chaos theory.
Curtis T. McMullen made a major advance, however, when he showed that it is possible to decide in part on the basis of the Mandelbrot set which associated dynamic system is "hyperbolic" and can therefore be described in more detail.
McMullen's results were suspected already in the sixties, but nobody had previously been able to prove this exact characterization of the Julia set.

McMullen classified stable algebraic families of rational maps, drawing upon the work of Mané, Sad and Sullivan on stable families of rational maps and Thurston’s work on the so-called critically finite branched coverings of the two-dimensional sphere.
McMullen has made major contribution to the theory both in terms of giving more palatable proofs for various important results and proving new results about the structure of the manifolds, under various conditions.
McMullen developed powerful techniques for studying the boundary, and proved a conjecture of Bers that the Bers’ boundary contains a dense set of ‘cusps’; by definition a cusp is a representation which associates to some (hyperbolic) element of the fundamental group a ‘parabolic’ Moebius transformation.

Cal Mathematician's Efforts Add Up to Highest Honor / He proved the `Monstrous Moonshine Conjecture'
Given only every four years to young mathematicians by the International Congress of Mathematicians, the awards were presented on Tuesday at the Berlin meeting of the Congress to Borcherds and also to Maxim Kontsevich, Curtis T. McMullen and William T. Gowers.
Gowers is a lecturer at Cambridge University in England, but until recently both Kontsevich and McMullen were on the UC Berkeley faculty.
The ``Monstrous Moonshine Conjecture,'' for which Borcherds produced his famed proof in 1989, describes the relationship between a concept known as modular functions, which are used in creating models of structures in two dimensions, and the largest group of whole numbers and their sums known in algebra.

Abstract: Curt McMullen's work involves two beautiful and closely related subjects: the theory of Kleinian groups and hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and the study of iterates of holomorphic functions of \C^ ("complex dynamics").
In the 1980's, Dennis Sullivan proposed a dictionary by means of which one can try to understand complex dynamics in terms of powerful analytic and geometric techniques in Kleinian groups (eg.
