  Curtisia dentata
Curtisia dentata trees are at their best in medium-moist forest, where they are found growing with Podocarpus latifolius (yellowwood) and Olea capensis (fl ironwood).
Curtisia is capable of living in the dense shade of a natural forest, but young trees grow faster under higher light intensities.
It is commonly supposed that Curtisia dentata got this common name because the shafts of assegais were once made of the wood, as Thunberg wrote in 1774, 'The Assagay tree is used for poles of wagons and as shafts for the Hottentot's javelins' (Palmer and Pitman 1972).

Recent studies identified a Cornales clade of Cornus, Alangium, Camptotheca, Davidia, Nyssa, Diplopanax, Mastixia, Curtisia, Hydrangeaceae and Loasaceae, and possibly the enigmatic Hydrostachys and Grubbia.
I constructed an rbcL matrix of 87 sequences containing the most complete set of cornalean taxa as well as other asterids and conducted parsimony analyses to ascertain the affinity of Hydrostachys and Grubbia to Cornales and to elucidate relationships within Cornales.
Relationships among these clades are, however, poorly resolved and supported, suggesting that more characters from other genes are needed to better understand the relationships within Cornales.

It seems that the Zulu 'assegai' is so termed with relation to the term for a South African tree (curtisia dentata), with the term assagai apparantly meaning spear or lance for the wood used.
In reviewing this application it appears the term 'assegai' is not known nor used by Zulu or associated tribes for the stabbing spear nor the tree.
The Zulu term for curtisia dentata, at least the bark, which is used medicinally, is 'lahleni'.
