The achievements of Curtiss spanned several decades and took the airplane from its wood, fabric and wire beginnings to the forerunners of modern transport aircraft.
One of the major contributions to flight progress during this period was the invention of ailerons, which was the basis for the litigious rift between the Wrights and Curtiss.

Curtiss married Lena Pearl Neff, daughter of Guy L. Neff, in Hammondsport on on March 7, 1898.

Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the renowned pioneer in aviation, was born 21 May 1878 in Hammondsport N.Y. He set many aeronautical records and designed several types of planes, including the Navy Curtiss flying boats which in 1919 were the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic.
Curtiss operated off the California coast on a number of fleet and training exercises until early in 1949 when she served as flagship for Commander First Fleet for 3 weeks of amphibious operations in Alaskan waters to evaluate cold weather equipment.
Curtiss served at San Diego in local operations until 29 September 1952 when she again sailed to Eniwetok as flagship during the atomic tests of Operation "Ivy." Returning to San Diego 4 December, she cruised the west coast, and visited Acapulco, Mexico in 1953.

 Curtiss JN-4D Jenny
Curtiss added the letter N to the designation because the modified Model J incorporated significant features of his Model N. The designation officially became the JN-2.
The performance of the JN-2 was less than satisfactory, so Curtiss improved the design with the substitution of unequal span wings (like the original modified Model J), and ailerons on the upper wings only with a wheel to control them in place of the outmoded yoke system.
At the same time, Curtiss began an extensive marketing campaign highlighting the many civilian applications of the Jenny, which included commuting, photo-mapping, policing, medical use, forest patrol, real estate work, and pleasure flying, proclaiming that "the JN is a good machine for the sportsman.

The Curtiss P-40 was undoubtedly one of the most controversial fighters to serve in quantity during the Second World War.
The belief in the "ascendancy of bombardment over pursuit" was rife in 1937 when the Curtiss P-40 was first envisaged, and it is a sobering thought that, with the Bell P-39 Airacobra this product of such a school of thought constituted more than half the strength of all USAAF fighters until July 1943.
The Curtiss H-87-D, or XP-40F, as the Merlin-powered prototype became known, then had 1,300 hp available for takeoff, and 1,120 hp at 18,500 feet, which offered vast improvements over earlier models and endowed a maximum speed of 373 mph.

The planes were indeed diverted from Tomahawk IIB contracts, which was equivalent to the P-40C, but when the the planes were actually built they were equipped with the externally-sealed fuel tanks that had been used on the Tomahawk IIA.
It seems that Curtiss had some surplus externally-sealed fuel tanks lying around that the British did not want, and decided to use them on the Chinese contract.
It was soon learned that it was wise not to mix it up with Japanese fighters on a one-to-one basis because of the inferior maneuverability and climb rate of the Curtiss, but instead to use the P-40's superior speed and diving ability to maximum advantage.

The patent fights between the Wrights, Curtiss and the rest of the early aviators is told with enough detail that you can get the sense of the times, without getting unnecessarily bogged down in a morass of detail.
The part about Curtiss getting Langley's aerodrome flying was something entirely new to me, and the feud that the Wrights had with the Smithsonian over their cooperation with Curtiss, leading them to send their flyer to a British museum, a revelation.
Glenn Hammond Curtiss appears to be a fascinating and underrated participant in the development of human flight.

The Curtiss JN-4 Jenny is a two-seat biplane trainer that was used during World War I by the United States of America and the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The aircraft was developed from the Curtiss Model J, designed by B. Douglas Thomas, and the Curtiss Model N, and two earlier versions of the aircraft were produced, the JN-2 and JN-3, before the first JN-4 flew in 1916.
After World War I, many of the Curtiss OX-5 powered Jennys were sold, very cheaply, on the civilian market, sometimes, for just a few hundred dollars, and some of these were still packed in their factory shipping crates.
