Air conditioning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An air conditioner (often abbreviated to AC in the United States, and air-con in Australia and in Great Britain) is an appliance or mechanism designed to extract heat from an area using a refrigeration cycle.
An earlier form of air conditioning was invented in Persia (Iran) thousands of years ago in the form of wind shafts on the roof, which caught the wind and passed it through water and blew the cooled air into the building [1].
In Europe, home air conditioning remains a rarity, and this lack is largely responsible for the estimated 35000 deaths left in the wake of the 2003 heat wave.

Curved Air's first album, Air Conditioning, was released in November 1970, a monumental recording that was flamboyantly issued as rock & roll's first-ever picture disc.
Curved Air bounced back in spring 1972 with their masterpiece, Phantasmagoria, home to the spectacular "Marie Antoinette" and Monkman's side-long "Phantasmagoria" suite.

 Curved Air
During this initial period, Curved Air actually managed to become a well-established commercial force in the UK, their albums all hitting the Top 20 and their live act being one of the most glamorous of the epoch, with light shows, fantastiwastic costumes and everything that goes along with it.
The last incarnation of Curved Air lasted for two years, was far more pop-inclined yet never really recaptured the commercial success of the early years, as prog was increasingly becoming out of favour, yet the world wasn't really ready for 'sellouts' yet, as it would be in the early Eighties.
With Curved Air's attitude, the main thing is to be stern and cold - and tasteful - and that riff really embodies that attitude, a love song that's even more merciless than the Rolling Stones in their Aftermath period, you could say.

Probably the greatest reason Curved Air are making such a big impact on the music world is that they have between them a highly unusual, not to mention unlikely, musical background.
Drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa was educated at Eton and went to art college for a while, and vocalist Sonja Kristina used to sing in "Hair" and turned down an offer to sing with the Strawbs just before she met the band.
Although Curved Air's music has strong classical overtones, they are very much against the idea ot trying to fuse rock and classics.

 Francis Monkman ... plus!
Something about that long baroque-and-roll instrumental suggested to me that there was an implicit similarity of approach between Procol Harum and Curved Air: in fact all the compositions on their début, Air Conditioning, were harmonically substantial, all their words were out-of-the-ordinary.
That impression of kinship was affirmed when the two bands toured together in the Seventies; and it was cemented twenty years on when Curved Air's violinist, Darryl Way, surfaced as the arranger of the two finest songs on The Symphonic Music Of Procol Harum.
The Curved Air gig's the original line-up, but Rob Martin only joins in on Vivaldi -- the rest of the bass part (along with other 'incidental' parts) was sequenced, Florian played with the click in cans.

Following Curved Air's demise in late 1976 Sonja toured with her own bands and also pursued an acting career via stage plays and TV.
In the eighties, she discovered a new hybrid of folk and psychedelic music and formed a new band called 'Sonja Kristina with Ty-Lor and Friends.' They achieved some success, not least rave reviews at the Glastonbury Festival.
This was followed by an 'acid-folk' reworking of the aforementioned Curved Air classic, 'Back Street Luv', and some other Curved Air songs including 'Melinda(More Or Less)', 'The Purple Speed Queen' and 'Midnight Wire'.
