A customs officer is generally a law enforcement officer working to enforce customs laws, with duties such as detecting and confiscating contraband, making sure that import duties are paid, and preventing those without legal authorization to do so from entering the jurisdiction.
Today customs officials work both for the CBP (part of the federal Department of Homeland Security) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
Customs officers have been arested for misuse of badges and for sexual assualts.

The 1993 amendments to § 267 entitle each "customs officer who is officially assigned to perform work in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek of the officer or in excess of 8 hours in a day" to overtime compensation at the rate of twice the basic hourly rate.
Customs officers who are called back to do overtime work generally receive credit for at least 2 hours of work and are paid 3 times the basic hourly rate for commuting time.
For instance, the statute provides that "a customs officer who is officially assigned to perform work in excess of 40 hours" in a workweek shall be compensated at twice his usual hourly wage.

The only thing that triggers this authority is that the Customs officer is searching something coming from outside the US and looking for merchandise or contraband.
