The Slits themselves were loud, obnoxious and impossible to ignore.
Before the end of the year, the Slits, who had been unwilling to compromise their vision of music for CBS, were dropped from the label and disbanded for good.

It took them until 1978 to finally secure a record deal with Island Records, and they released their first album, the dub influenced Cut.
It wasn't until 1981 when they would release their next album, Return Of The Giant Slits, and then disband shortly after.
The purpose of this site is to supply lyrics to the Slits albums, which seem to be next to impossible to find!

 The Slits
They were given a one album and single deal by Island and produced the album 'Cut'.
The Slits struggled on till 1982 even doing another John Peel session with a certain Neneh Cherry helping out on vocals and releasing more records but by then their moment had long gone.
Along with their pals, The Raincoats, The Slits were one of the few all-female bands to garner critical acclaim, a cult following, and avoid being marketed as sex objects by their record company.

The Slits: Live at the Gibus Club - PopMatters Music Review
The Slits are perhaps the perfect example of that trend, as the Slits that appear on this 1978 recording sound nothing like the ironic dub-punkers who gave the world the classic album Cut.
The Slits tear through their songs, as if they're trying to get off-stage as quickly as possible, even though the band's tempo is about half as slow as the typical punk band's.
The set's highlight is the Slits' romp through "Femme Fatale", probably the most professional sounding track on the set, where Ari Up finds a perfect vehicle for her voice (was I the only one who didn't realize her vocals similarities to Nico?).

They even manage that by doing as little as adding piano on “Typical Girls.” All the little things sound so much more spectacular when set apart as they are on Cut.
Pushing long bass lines that are louder than anything else, the scratchy guitars come laced over the top, the Slits' sound can't be mistaken for any other.
But in the big picture, there is nothing little or ordinary about The Slits.

 The Slits
The Slits' first album was the dub-influenced Cut, which was recorded at Farm Ridge Studios with renowned reggae producer Dennis Bovell.
While on this tour, the Slits were immortalized in all their primitive glory in The Punk Rock Movie.
More recently, the CD titled In the Beginning was released in late 1997; a compilation of live material, it comprises both the Slits' older songs (in the traditional punk genre) as well as newer compositions (heavy on the reggae, dub and other experimental influences), and spans the period 1977 through 1981.

The band's resulting debut album, CUT, has been called a classic and is a favorite of music critics and fans of the group.
Budgie's drumming evidently allayed whatever concerns were keeping the Slits from being signed to a recording contract, because the band soon landed a deal Island Records (although no male was evidently ever an official member of the Slits).
Budgie was replaced on drums late in 1979 by Bruce Willie Smith, who had been The Pop Group's drummer for their alarmingly abrasive jazz-rock debut album.

Late in the year Palmolive left the band to join the Raincoats, and is the drummer on that band's first, self-titled, album.
The fact that she was a self-taught drummer who tenured for two ground-breaking all-female punk bands during the height of the punk revolution is a rather extraordinary story in itself.

 ari up
Looking like an identikit Glastonbury stereotype, Ari Up has been a figure-head on the reggae party scene since her days in The Slits.
First single to be taken from the 'Dread More Dan Dead' album, 'Baby Mother' is Brit-inflected reggae that happily strays into dancehall and a bit of baile funk, with just the merest hints of the protagonists former life as a member of...
'True Warrior' has the now-classic sparse 'cut'-era vibration with ari's harmonised vocal, alternately chatting and singing, while 'I'm allergic' alternates between the dubbed-out reverb-heavy melodic chorus and the full-on chopped punkrock guitar of the verse, all with Aris' unmistakable...

Crutch Review: The Music of The Raincoats
By the time of Cut's release Palmolive had left The Slits to join what would become The Raincoats along with guitarist Ana Da Silva, bassist Gina Birch, and violist/guitarist Vicky Aspinall.
Wasting little time The Raincoats quickly began recording their first single "Fairytale In The Supermarket" which would be featured on their first self-titled debut album.
However, the story of The Raincoats begins with another all female Post-punk band, The Slits.

Blackbeard rides again by Jim Pinckney New Zealand Listener
Bovell's production finesse and broadminded musical approach led him to work with the Slits on their classic Cut album, remix Marvin Gaye and most famously produce and arrange Linton Kwesi Johnson's dub poetry.
At his peak, Bovell managed to combine a distillation of the best of what he would play out on his Sufferers hi-fi sound-system with jazz, rock and blues influences; the results were invariably unlike any of his contemporaries.
This release captures the multi-instrumentalist Bovell and a distinguished line-up of guests firing on all dubwise cylinders, at a time when progressive UK reggae was at a premium.

Siouxsie herself would attend Pistols shows in a cut-out bra exposing her tits, staged her own "Sex Olympics" at a debauched house party and took gay friend "Berlin" to the pub on a leash.
The 100 Club gig increased Siouxsie's infamy in the music weeklies, beating The Slits' Ari-Up and X-Ray Spex's PolyStyrene to the position of female Rotten, but it was her supporting role in the historic Bill Grundy TV interview of December 1,1976 that would give her column inches in the tabloids.
Inspired by the woozy psychedelia of The Beatles' White Album and Siouxsie's discovery of recreational LSD, the Banshees' fifth was a sensual affair.

Meanwhile, with time and experience and lots of practice on their side by that time, the Slits were starting to sound much more cohesive and accessible.
After drummer Budgie was replaced by Pop Group's Bruce Smith in 1979, the band parted with Virgin and underwent several more personnel changes, reggae musician Prince Hammer and trumpeter Don Cherry (father of Neneh Cherry) lending their respective talents.

Their heavily lauded and just plain heavy third album, Mezzanine, released in the spring of 1998, makes it clearer that their work did not represent so much a revolutionary break from existing styles.
The Pop Group were like this group that came out with a heavy punk sound but with funky guitars on it - 'She's Beyond Good and Evil.' And also some of the Clash's stuff, which was quite funky as well - 'Radio Clash' and stuff.
