Animation refers to the process in which each frame of a film or movie is produced individually, whether generated as a computer graphic, or by photographing a drawn image, or by repeatedly making small changes to a model (see claymation and stop motion), and then photographing the result.
Because animation is very time-consuming and often very expensive to produce, the majority of animation for TV and movies comes from professional animation studios.
The first animated cartoon was from Frenchman mile Reynaud, who created praxinoscope, animation system of 12 pictures, and films of about 500~600 pictures, projected on its own thatre optique, system near from modern film projector, at Muse Grvin in Paris, France, the october 28, 1892.

Silhouette animation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silhouette animation is one of many forms of stop motion and is also a simplified variation of graphic animation, which involves the frame-by-frame moving of cut out graphic shapes.
When backlit instead, the cutout animation becomes a series of simplified dark (fl) images, and is referred to as silhouette animation, used by German animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger for The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the first feature-length animated film, made in 1923.
Silhouette animation is rarely used as its own art form, except for brief dramatic or comedic scenes in a few cutout animation films, such as when a character turns the lights out in an episode of South Park.

What all forms of animation have in common is that they create some kind of perceived motion by showing successive frames at a relatively high speed.
By comparison, traditional hand-drawn animation uses anywhere from 8 frames per second (for poor quality animation) to 12 frames per second (for standard animation) to 24 frames per second (for short bursts of smooth, realistic motion).
In the traditional animation world, this is known as cutout animation, since it's generally accomplished by cutting a shape out of paper and moving the shape in front of the camera.

An example of this is "Creatoon", more information can be found at the Creatoon web site and the UK based The Cut-Out Animation Company is one of many using this software to produce professional work.
