Cuttyhunk Island is the outermost of the Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts, located between Buzzards Bay to the north and Vineyard Sound to the south.
Cuttyhunk is about a mile and a half long, and three quarters of a mile wide, with a large and excellent natural harbor at the eastern end of the island.
Cuttyhunk is covered with rocks and stones that are elsewhere found only in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire.

 Cuttyhunk Light History
Cuttyhunk is an island at the far southwestern corner of the Elizabeth Islands off Falmouth on Cape Cod, which mark the southeastern boundary of Buzzards Bay.
The Ponsarts were living at Cuttyhunk Light in December of 1945 when the "Flying Santa," writer Edward Rowe Snow, dropped packages for the family from a plane.
Octave Ponsart is buried on Cuttyhunk and a lighthouse is carved on his gravestone.

The name "Cuttyhunk" is thought to be a corruption of an Algonquian description of the island which roughly translates into "Land's End." It is known that before European colonization, the Algonquian-speaking Wampanoag tribe occasionally fished and hunted here.
Today, Cuttyhunk is still connected to that most famous of all whaling ports by a ferry.

CUTTYHUNK - Late Monday afternoon, Cuttyhunk residents were sitting around, a popular Island pursuit, when they spied the sails of a 1600s sailing vessel nearing Penikese.
They were thrilled that the vessel had decided to travel by Cuttyhunk, the site of an outpost established by Captain Gosnold on his 1602 voyage to New England waters.
Cuttyhunkers, well-trained by years of unexpected guests showing up at their door with no idea of where to eat, sprang into action, thinking both speed and volume.

The lighthouse and keeper's house were razed, and a skeleton tower put in its place.

In 1759, one of the earliest lighthouses was built on Naushon at Tarpaulin Cove and six years later, a light was built on Cuttyhunk to warn of the disastrous reefs near the islands.
Cuttyhunk is the outermost of the Elizabeth Islands, which are, for my money, the loveliest vision off the Massachusetts coast.
With the exception of Cuttyhunk and, to a lesser degree, Naushon, they're deserted.

Cuttyhunk Pond is interesting in that it is a shallow coastal lagoon that is not especially well flushed, and from a hydrographic sense, is similar to some of the less flushed embayments we have studied elsewhere in Buzzards Bay, but with considerably less nitrogen loading.
Cuttyhunk Harbor is also interesting in that it is closed to shellfishing in summer due to high fecal coliform levels.
Cuttyhunk Island at Fish Dock and Penikese Island were monitored for oxygen in all four years of our study.
