The Ohio and Erie Canal flows through a lock that once eased boats down the waterway from Akron to Cleveland beside the Court House Visitor Center in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio.
Although a presidential veto of a national waterway project forced the proposed canal's financial burden on New York alone, the canal bill passed the state legislature in Apr., 1817.
The middle section (Utica to Salina) was completed in 1820; the eastern section through the Mohawk River valley was finished in 1823.

While machinations within the Interior department further stoked the flames of dissent, the Sagebrush Rebellion flickered to life in the Cuyahoga Valley in the summer of 1977 with the formation of the Cuyahoga Valley Homeowners and Residents Association.
There have been some people who were not excited about the prospect of the park, but there have been landowners who were thrilled with the National Park Service coming here and who have been extremely pleased with their negotiations with the National Park Service.
The publicity gave the park increased visibility and helped educate the public about what the valley has to offer.

Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was authorized by Congress in 1974 with the stated purpose of "preserving and protecting for public use and enjoyment, the historic, scenic, natural, and recreational values of the Cuyahoga River and the adjacent lands of the Cuyahoga Valley...." This mandate has been consistently supported by subsequent management plans and guidelines.
Park staff should cooperate with state wildlife managers to encourage increased trapping on adjacent non federal land, as a means for reducing population pressures on park lands.
The park is surrounded by a combination of urban, suburban, and semi-rural areas where the land use is single-family residential, light industrial, or agricultural.

The National Park Service believes deer are adversely affecting the overall health of the Cuyahoga Valley ecosystem and proposes to reduce the deer population in order to achieve the goal of maintaining native species biodiversity within the park and immediate area.
Members of the New River Gorge National River (WV) search and rescue team received the National Park Service's Exemplary Act Award for their heroic and successful, nine-hour long effort to rescue and save the life of a canoeist who became stranded on a rock at the base of Sandstone Falls last October.
A National Park Service archeological investigation determined that the discovery was a Civil War battlefield burial, probably a battle participant, slain near the Railroad Cut where intense fighting took place on July 1, 1863.

Seven parks are less than 1,000 acres, four parks are between 1,000 and 10,000 acres, and four parks are between 10,000 and 100,000 acres in size.
The smaller parks include four of the seven parks with tallgrass prairie and three forested parks, all of which primarily provide a landscape for the interpretation of cultural resources.

The U.S. Geological Survey has been looking at bacteria levels in the river in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park for years in an effort to determine whether the park can safely gauge when the water quality is safe for canoeing and swimming.
Recreational use of the river is not recommended because park officials can't predict when bacteria levels are low enough for safe use, said Brian McHugh, the park's chief ranger.
Those most at risk from the pathogens in the Cuyahoga River are anglers, boaters and swimmers.
