Cwmcarn steam colliery began its life as a downcast shaft for the neighbouring Prince of Wales colliery.
It was closed down in 1968 and the site was cleared, it now forms the beginning of the Cwmcarn scenic drive.

A meeting of all CWU members at Solectron Wales factory at Cwmcarn agreed yesterday to launch a campaign to save the factory and Solectron jobs.
The decision of the workforce follows confirmation that the company is proposing to relocate even more manufacturing work at the plant overseas.

They intended to sink six coal pits in the Abercarn district, but only two were completed; No. 1 and No. 6 or Cwmcarn pit (not to be confused with the Cwmcarn colliery) No.6 was a shallow pit at 63 yards to the Rock vein seam.
Because of the ensuing raging underground fires and with the fear of further explosions, the two rescue teams, one of who had descended the Cwmcarn shaft were ordered back to the surface.
Later it was maintained as a pumping and ventilation pit for Cwmcarn Colliery and the pithead offices were used as the administration centre by the N.C.B. for the South Wales No. 6 area.

The recently-opened Y Mynydd Mojo downhill track at Cwmcarn is a blast, but one of the drawbacks of a nearly-2km course with 250m of vertical drop is that it's inevitably a fair way to the top.
It wants to hear from a suitably qualified operator to run an uplift service for mountain bikers - a minibus and trailer or similar to take riders and their bikes up the hill to the start of the downhill trail.
The route will follow Cwmcarn Forest Drive, so there will also be an opportunity to provide a service to other visitors who want to gain access to Twmbarlwm Mountain or other areas of the Forest Drive.

The new downhill course is expected to be open to the public by the end of June and the Council will be working in partnership with Forestry Commission Wales to maximize the benefit to the local tourist economy.

Cwmcarn is only half an hour from Bristol and it's a great ride.
After a couple of hundred yards of double-track descending look for a wooden V shaped barrier on the left, leading on to a snaky open singletrack where you’ll ricochet off numerous tree stumps on a gradual descent back towards the road.
The spice to many of these is the disconcerting drop at the edge, on this fast trail you ride six feet above a minor road which either slows you down or is way up in the dangerous sports league.

After successfully navigating passport control, changing our money and beeing released from quarantine with only the usual mandatory injections, we headed to Cwmcarn for the blissfull singletrack that has been lovingly carved into the side of the hill.

This last descent is a nice mix of long fast straights and deceptive little bends, on the video I manage to ace past both Lenseman and Rob as they miss time their turns.
There are two or three other top downhills on the route if you need to add some more extreme descending to the main trails off-camber mix.
Cwmcarn, definitely worth the drive even if it can’t yet compare with Coed y Brenin’s vast trail network.

We managed to get the gap between the kicker and the landing big enough to get the Forestry Commissions van in it sideways.
We’re normally plagued by bad weather whenever we organise anything, but it looked set to be hot and sunny for our club outing to Cwmcarn, in South Wales.
The weatherman warned of thunderstorms which never materialised and it was scorching hot on Saturday afternoon when we arrived.
