  Cy Endfield @ Filmbug UK
After attending Yale University, Endfield began his career as a theatre director and drama coach, becoming an important figure in New York's progressive theatre scene.
Despite this shared background, it was largely Endfield's skill as a card magician which brought him to the attention of Orson Welles, who recruited him as an apprentice for Mercury Productions (at that time based at RKO Pictures).
In 1951 Endfield was named as a Communist at a HUAC hearing.

Cy Endfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after attending Yale University, Endfield began his career as a theatre director and drama coach, becoming an important figure in New York's progressive theatre scene.
The film was a major leap from anything he had produced before in terms of budget and social commentary, a coruscating attack on press corruption which could equally be taken as a wider attack on the McCarthyite ideology of the times.
Cy Endfield died in 1995 in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, England, aged 80.

Cy was a bouncy, plump man, though no more plump, I suppose, than I have since become.
Cy had heard that Stanley Kubrick was making 2001: A Space Odyssey, eventually to have its premiere in 1968.
It guaranteed Cy a financial carpet for the making of Only Tomorrow, with figures usually connected with distances to nearby stars: $30m, I believe it was.

While it is obviously meant to celebrate the courage and resourcefulness of British colonial soldiers and their Zulu warrior counterparts in the battle of Rorke’s Drift on January 23, 1879, it relies on an essentially revisionist representation of the key battle it dramatizes.
Perhaps Endfield and Prebble were mindful of Rorke’s Drift’s true history, which was not accurately reflected in their screenplay.

Cy Endfield (Try and Get Me!), the overlooked but very talented fllisted American director who emigrated to England in the 1950s, has created a no-nonsense epic masterpiece, though one where the filmmaker has fudged a lot of the details about a real heroic battle in British history.
Yet this fictionalized account is visually the best of such films made, a classic study in heroism and in military planning that stays with the men in battle as they fight for survival and doesn't go off into the politics of why they are there.
The Zulus never even saw a movie before and it wasn't until Endfield showed them a Gene Autry oater that they knew what he was talking about and were able to go along with his directing.

One has to wonder where the police are during all this mayhem, but the fact that the screenplay, by John Kruse and Cy Endfield, received a BAFTA nomination suggests the scenario was at least reasonably realistic.
Endfield also directed this, the second of six films he would helm for Baker, the most famous of which would be the all-time classic, Zulu (1964).
Endfield strives to lend proceedings realism and there is an absence of the mawkishness and prudery often found in entertainment of the time.

It is likely Endfield did not even read the lengthy novel and its biographical relatives, or if he did chose a very different approach for a very different audience.
