Topic: Cy Rigler

Cy Rigler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rigler joined the majors at a time when the use of one umpire in a game was still common; by the time his career ended, three umpires had become standard.
Rigler was highly regarded for his outgoing nature and for his ability to let criticism roll off his back without becoming visibly irritated.
Rigler was promoted to supervisor of the NL staff in December 1935, succeeding the late Hank O'Day, but he never got the opportunity to fulfill his duties.

One of baseball's most illustrious umpires, Rigler was a mountain of a man who stood over 6 feet and weighed 240.
However, the oft-repeated explanation that he did it for the benefit of deaf player Dummy Hoy is unlikely since Hoy was out of the majors by the time Rigler arrived.
Rigler called Sam Rice 's controversial "mystery catch" in the 1925 WS, when the Senators' Rice fell backward into the temporary bleachers while pursuing a long drive off the bat of Pirates batter Earl Smith.

Rixey jumped from the Virginia pitching staff to the Phillies through the efforts of National League umpire Charles (Cy) Rigler, who was moonlighting on the basketball and baseball staffs of the university.
Rigler suggested the move to Rixey, who initially refused, saying he planned to be a chemist.
Rigler sweetened the deal by promising to split equally with the young pitcher whatever finder's bonus he might receive from Philadelphia, which turned out to be $2,000.

Signing Habits and Autograph Analysis of Hall of Fame Pitcher Eppa ''Jeptha'' Rixey, Jr.
was born to a prominent family on May 3, 1891 in Culpepper, VA. He enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1909, where he starred in basketball and was encouraged by the Cavaliers' baseball coach and National League umpire Charles "Cy" Rigler to try pitching.
Rigler, impressed with Rixey's competitive and crafty style, arranged for the big youngster to sign a contract with the Philadelphia club during his junior year.
The league chastised the moonlighting Rigler who received a $2000 bonus (which was voided) setting a precedent that consequently prohibited umpires from serving in a scouting capacity thereafter.

There was no immediate indication whether Rice had speared the ball before falling and it took him about 15 seconds to untangle himself from the fans and return to the field -- at which time he held up the ball to signal he had made the catch.
The Pirates disputed the call, saying a Washington fan may have stuffed the ball into Rice's glove, but umpire Cy Rigler called Smith out.
Rice parried questions about the play the rest of his life, but in a letter to Hall of Fame officials -- a missive to be opened only after his death, which occurred in 1974 -- he tried to put an end to nearly 50 years of suspense.

ODN dissociation from the carrier was assessed by comparing diffusion constants of CL-ODN complexes and ODNs before complexation and after release.
Based on this fact, they can be discriminated by FCS analysis, which has been recognized as a reliable method for measuring diffusion constants of molecular species with high precision (Rigler et al., 1993; Schwille et al., 1997; Haustein and Schwille, 2003).
Therefore, FCS is used here to assess the release of ODN from the complexes upon interaction with the target membranes by measuring the diffusion constants of the molecular species inside lumens of ODN-filled GUVs and comparing the obtained values to the diffusion constants of free ODNs and of the CL-ODN complexes in solution.

Hoy’s claim also conflicts with a 1909 edition of Spalding’s Official Base Ball Guide, which said umpires adopted signals so fans could follow the game.
