Miller is known for his contributions in the areas of direction and design, especially in the area of visual design—the look and feel of the Myst and Riven worlds.
Richard Vander Wende, co-director and co-designer of Riven, was likewise responsible for orchestrating the visual language of that world.

According to unofficial reports, Washington-based developer Cyan Worlds - the studio behind the hugely successful Myst series of PC games - is facing imminent closure, with the majority of staff being laid off last Friday.
The company has yet to issue a statement but reports say the majority of Cyan World's 40 staff members were made redundant on Friday.
Cyan Worlds had already completed work on Myst V: End of Ages, to be published by Ubisoft on September 20 in the US.

Cyan and their worlds have been part of my life for so very long and the thought of their brilliance coming to an end makes my heart heavy.
Cyan has pasted on, no more am I to be blessed, with the tails that I have grown to love, with the world that no more will bring me the joy it has always done in the past...
Cyan had created a whole new type of game, copied by many, but the originals are unique in the way you were (and had to be to solve the games) immersed in the world of the D'ni.

Myst developer Cyan Worlds laid off the majority of its staff late last week and appears to be facing closure in the near future.
Cyan founder Rand Miller and President Tony Fryman are reported to be the only employees left, acting as a "skeleton crew." The company previously employed 40 "artists, programmers, designers, and support personnel," according to its website.
Cyan was founded in 1987 and released such PC titles as Cosmic Osmo and Spelunx, which both featured mechanics that foreshadowed the impact the company would later have on the point-and-click genre with Myst.

In our case, it's a hearty pat on the back — and an instruction to go and read "Myst Opportunities" on page 24 of PC Gamer UK's current issue, which reports on how Miller's work has been put to use in the classroom by a chap called Tim Rylands.
Cyan deserves another life just for the warmth we got reading about that.

 A tribute to Cyan Worlds - Topic
Sorry, I cannot give up the hope that as long as the Cyan World exists as a company, and it still does even though there is only a skeleton crew left, that it will be making a comeback.
I think I understand how this has been a very lean time for Cyan, and how this reduction is about the only way they can preserve Cyan as a company while arranging for their future.
Cyan should be proud to have fans like this.
