In the years since Forrest Gump, films celebrating the triumph of the human spirit have trailed off into either self-parody or irrelevance, mere cannon fodder for cynics unable to keep their empathy down without a heaping spoonful of irony on the side.
Originally produced for CBC's The Nature of Things, Cyberman is a profile of Mann and his work testing the hypothesis that the world can only be understood objectively through technology.
Appropriately, Cyberman is a high-gloss, technically accomplished piece; Lynch integrates several experimental photographic and editing techniques into the documentary structure, the better to do justice to Mann's uniquely high-tech perception.

The Doctor joins a crew shooting a movie about the Cyberman invasion of London, ostensibly to help make the story more plausible; in fact, his real mission is to obscure the truth and ensure that UNIT remains a secret organisation.
His ideas are enthusiastically accepted, but he notices that the producer's young daughter is oddly distant; although it seems that the child is simply not enjoying herself on the hectic movie set, he suspects that other forces are at work.
The suggestions he makes are incorporated into the movie, serving to make the invasion more plausible and potentially successful, and eventually he tracks down the culprit responsible for young Kate's odd behaviour, a Cyber-infiltration unit which implanted her with a tracker and was using her to observe the Doctor.
