Process for manufacture of cyclohexanol from phenol - Patent 4410741
In the process of phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanol, improved yields of cyclohexanol are obtained by maintaining a hydrogen atmosphere throughout the entire operation.
In the batch-type method of manufacture of cyclohexanol by the hydrogenation of phenol in the presence of a nickel catalyst in an amount of about 2 to 10 percent by weight catalyst, at a temperature of from about 100.degree.

Amino Acid Decarboxylation Catalyzed by 2-Cyclohexen-1-One - [www.rhodium.ws]
Strangely, the decarboxylation rate gradually decreased in proportion to increase in the purity of the cyclohexanol.
However, with 98.1% purity cyclohexanol, the reaction was completed in 7 h by the addition of only 3% peroxide.
The solubility of the α-amino acid to cyclohexanol is an important factor affecting the rate of decarboxylation.

The overall idea was to remove the hydrozide ion from the cyclohexanol and create an oily (and very smelly) cyclohexene.
When this was performed in lab I started with 7.40 grams of cyclohexanol and after running two distillations I gained a final product of 2.5231 grams of product for a percent yield of 41.5%.
If cyclohexanol were present in the solution one would expect to find OH bonds; most likely one will see them in the form of O2.

The dehydration of alcohols using strong mineral acids, such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid, as catalysts is a general laboratory method for preparing alkenes.
Any unreacted cyclohexanol (the starting material) and phosphoric acid (the catalyst) are left in the distilling flask because of their high boiling points (161°C and 213°C, respectively).
Using graduated pipets, place 2.0g (2.1 mL, 0.020 mole) of cyclohexanol and 0.8 mL of 85% phosphoric acid along with 1 or 2 boiling chips in the distillation flask and mix thoroughly.

 Cyclohexane Degradation Pathway
One gene cluster encodes enzymes involved in oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol.
The enzyme catalyzing this reaction is found to be homologous to butane monooxygenase, encoded by the bmo gene operon, whose nucleotide sequence is reported (Sluis et al., 2002).
The second larger cluster of genes encodes all the enzymes required for oxidation of cyclohexanol to adipate.

Kinetics and Mechanism of Cyclohexanol Dehydration in High-Temperature Water
We examined cyclohexanol dehydration in pure water at temperatures of 250, 275, 300, 350, and 380
Under these conditions, cyclohexanol dehydrates readily in the absence of added catalysts to form cyclohexene as the major product.
The experimental results implied a reaction mechanism that comprises two pathways: (1) reversible cyclohexanol dehydration to form cyclohexene through an E2 mechanism, and (2) subsequent cyclohexene protonation to form the cyclohexyl cation, which rapidly rearranges to form methyl cyclopentyl cations, which then lose a proton to form methyl cyclopentenes.

Lab 4: Dehydration of Cyclohexanol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
In this lab, we were concerned with the acid-catalyzed dehydration of cyclohexanol to yield cyclohexene and water.
Adding an excess of cyclohexanol isn't economically feasible, but it is relatively easy to remove the products by distillation.
A consequence of this equilibrium in the particular case of dehydration is that the product cyclohexene must be kept as dry as possible, because any time that it comes in contact with water and even a trace of acid it will revert back to the starting material.

It is believed that the adsorption equilibrium constant for cyclohexanol is around 1 and is roughly one or two orders of magnitude greater than the adsorption equilibrium constants for the other compounds.
From runs 4-5, we see that when the partial pressures of cyclohexanol and steam are held constant, and the partial pressure of cyclohexene increase, the reaction rate decreases.
From runs 6-7, we see that when the partial pressures of cyclohexanol and cyclohexene are held constant, and the partial pressure of steam increases, the reaction rate decreases.

Answer: a-Explanation: According to the Tables in the Handbook for Organic Chemistry Lab, cyclohexanol is an irritant and hygroscopic.
The organic layer in this case is methylene chloride, which is more dense than water (look up the density in the Tables) and thus on the bottom in a separatory funnel.
Answer: a-Explanation: The NMR spectra of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone do not have protons at a ppm of greater than 4, and the given NMR has a singlet at 5.3 ppm, so the NMR shows that there is something in the sample that is neither cyclohexanone or cyclohexanol.
