 TC LEON-ELINE (11S) REPORT - 3rd to 8th of FEBRUARY 2000
Whilst the above would be enough to make most think TC Leon was a spent force, subsequent warnings showed a regeneration, it was re-named Tropical Cyclone Eline by RSMC La Reunion, and went on to devastate parts of Madagascar and Mozambique.
At noon WST tropical cyclone Leon, Category 1, 995 hPa, with maximum wind gusts of 100 km/hr (55 KT), had formed and was located near 12.2 S 106.4 E, 210 kilometres (115 NM) SSE of Christmas Island and moving WSW at 18 kilometres per hour (10 KT).
This part of the journey of TC Leon-Eline will be the subject of a seperate report.

Tropical Cyclone Leon-Eline (TC-11S / SIO #6) 3 - 23 February ---------------------------------------------- Tropical Cyclone Leon-Eline was certainly one of the longest-lived and farthest-traveled cyclones on record in the Southern Hemisphere.
Eline was being steered on the northwesterly course by a subtropical ridge located to the south-southwest of the cyclone.
The history of this system as Tropical Cyclone Eline is detailed in the section of this summary covering the Southwest Indian basin.

A special thanks is due to Patrick Hoareau of Rennes, France, (and a former resident of La Reunion) for preparing the tracks for Tropical Storms Damienne and Felicia and the Eline portion of long-lived Tropical Cyclone Leon-Eline (which originated in the Australian Region).
Since Leon-Eline began in the Australian Region, the complete track for this cyclone is included in the section for the Australian Region.
Note #2: Tropical Cyclone Eline underwent a remarkable intensification just prior to making landfall in Madagascar near Mahanoro around 1500 UTC.
