Another tropical cyclone threatens the South Pacific islands -- With maximum sustained surface winds of up to 130 mph, Tropical Cyclone Percy was moving across the South Pacific along a track that took it by American Samoa and possibly to within 300 miles of the Cook Islands.
This tropical cyclone, the South Pacific's equivalent of a hurricane, follows by a week Tropical Cyclone Otto, which caused damage on the Cook Islands.
4-5 March 1899...Tropical cyclone Mahina (the Bathurst Bay Hurricane) crossed the Great Barrier Reef and generated a 48-ft storm surge across Barrow Point, Queensland, Australia.

Percy is still a strong Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, and according to the to JTWC and NOAA forecasts is likely to strengthen to a Category 4 storm in the next 12-24 hours.
ON ITS FORECAST TRACK, THE CYCLONE IS EXPECTED TO LIE AROUND 70 MILES SOUTHEAST OF PUKAPUKA OR 145 MILES NORTHWEST OF SUWARROW BY BY 280900 UTC.
Authorities in the rest of Samoa and American Samoa continue to maintain advisories and watches, and should be very vigilant in case Percy takes an unexpected early turn toward the south or west.

New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister, Phil Goff has been updated on Tokelau's relief and reconstruction needs in the wake of Cyclone Percy.
Mr Goff says Tokelau is slowly recovering from the devastation caused by the cyclone, which battered the atolls three weeks ago.
He says New Zealand has allocated up to 364-thousand US dollars in relief supplies for Tokelau, covering food, medicine, drinking water, building materials and equipment.

The delegate for Swains Island in the American Samoan legislature, Alex Jennings, who is based in Pago Pago has expressed grave concerns to EOC about the situation on Swains and has asked for a flyover, food drop and medical supplies drop.
She confirms that there are 3 families on the island, but other reports state that the exact number of people range from 5-20.

Whilst sheltering in the Percy Group, Queensland, was driven on to a reef between Bamborough and Hunter Islands, 1918.
It is of only minor interest that she was further damaged in the 1981 cyclone.
She was built as an auxiliary steamer in 1851 and she led an eventful life, being stranded on King Island in 1852, ashore on the Oyster Bank at Newcastle in 1855, then badly damaged by fire at Sydney in the same year while being repaired.

Pukapuka leader in Rarotonga Tingika Elikana referred to the response to their call for help after Percy lashed their island on Sunday as "overwhelming".

The airstrip on Pukapuka has been damaged, so an RNZAF Hercules transport aircraft loaded with emergency supplies has been sent instead to the island of Penrhyn, northeast of Pukapuka, and its cargo will be transported by sea to Pukapuka and Nassau by this weekend.
The Cook Islands government declared a state of emergency in Pukapuka and Nassau on February 28.
