The Cyclophyllidea is the largest tapeworm lineage encompassing about 56% of genera (380 out of 680) and more than 60% of species (3100 out of about 5150) of these highly ubiquitous parasites of vertebrate animals.
The goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive phylogeny of the tapeworm order Cyclophyllidea using DNA sequence data.
Currently, a robust molecular phylogeny of the Cyclophyllidea is lacking with only one comprehensive morphology-based study published so far while phylogenetic analyses of majority of families have never been attempted.

We describe 4 metacestodes classified according to their morphology as belonging to the genus Mesocestoides (Cestoda, Cyclophyllidea) in the abdominal cavity of an individual wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus (Rodentia, Muridae) trapped in a Spanish Mediterranean ecosystem.
The morphological study of the metacestodes shows evidence of three types of asexual proliferation: longitudinal fission (presence of supernumerary suckers in the scolex); budding; and a third form of asexual division not previously described in cestodes, with a mother tetrathyridium containing some daughter metacestodes (endopolygeny).
Furthermore, this is the first report of endogenous asexual proliferation in any metacestode exhibiting primitive or gymnosomic development.

DISCUSSION (Scolex Morphology of Proteocephalid Cestodes Parasites of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes )
The results of the analyses showed the Proteocephalidea as the sister-group of the Nippotaeniidea + Tetrabothriidea and Cyclophyllidea; additionally the Lecanicephalidea are basal to the Proteocephalidea.
However, in my opinion, the most acceptable phylogeny developed by Freeman (1973), based on ontogeny of the cestodes, stressed a close relationship between the Tetraphyllidea (along with the Lecanicephalidea and Diphyllidea) and the Proteocephalidea.
Additionally, Freeman considered the Proteocephalidea to be diphyletic, and to contain two independent lineages of the Cyclophyllidea, which would make the former order paraphyletic.

There are two orders which contain representatives which parasitise mammals, the Pseudophyllidea and Cyclophyllidea, examples of which will be considered here.
The head region is called the scolex and is the region of attachment to the host mucosa.
The eggs of most cestodes are characterised by having embryos which have 3 pairs of hooks which are easily visible and thus the eggs are referred to as hexacanths.

Case report: human brain abscess due to a tetra-acetabulate plerocercoid metacestode (Cyclophyllidea).
Morphologic analysis based on the histologic sections revealed that the metacestode was a tetra-acetabulate plerocercoid of the order Cyclophyllidea, with a distinct rostellum and pseudosegmentation of the dorsoventrally flattened hindbody.
This is the first report of a tetra-acetabulate plerocercoid from a human host and the first report of any cyclophyllidean plerocercoid from the human brain.

The classification of the cestodes is still the subject of controversy, with only the four orders Tetraphyllidea, Trypanorhyncha, Pseudophyllidea and Cyclophyllidea being universally recognised as orders within the Eucestodes.
There are however many other cestodes, and the following classification, with the eucestodes grouped within 12 orders, is tentatively given as a guide to group as a whole.
In other genera the scolex may be more complex, as with tapeworms of the genus Bothrium, where two tubes with narrow slits at the end make up the holdfast.
