Cyclops (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cyclops (Scott Summers) is a Marvel Comics superhero, as the field leader of the X-Men.
Cyclops had an on-again/off-again relationship with Jean Grey during their time in the X-Men, and when he refused to leave with the other senior members, feeling that the X-Men was the only place he truly belonged, she was deeply upset.
Cyclops (during a time in which he thought Jean was dead) went on a date with Colleen Wing and then he briefly dated Lee Forrester prior to meeting Madelyne Pryor.

Corsair (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Years later, Corsair and the Starjammers met his son Scott, now the mutant hero Cyclops and leader of the X-Men, in the final battle against D'ken. Though at first ignorant of each other's identities, they eventually learned the truth and were reconciled.
Corsair's felt that since he could not keep the plane from crashing and that he could not save his own wife, he felt that Scott and Alex were in better hands in the care of the various homes that his two sons stayed at rather than with him.
He was eventually killed by his son Cyclops, who believed that there was no other way to save him.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Cyclops
Early critics of Marvel Comics' X-Men claimed it was simply Fantastic Four redux, citing a long list of parallels between the two.
Cyclops is able to project destructive force beams from his eyes, and the down side is, probably because of brain damage inflicted by an accident in early adolescence, he can't turn it off.
Back in the early 1940s, The Comet, part of the MLJ line, had to take special steps to keep the death rays that were constantly being given out by his eyes from killing the wrong people.

Cyclops, leader of the X-Men, is not the immediate choice for a solo project.
The problem is that the story has to contort itself to explain why Cyclops is off on his own and why he doesn't call the X-Men in, and the rationales make little sense given who the character is.
There's really no reason for Cyclops to be off on his own, and the notion of a hero taking a vacation and finding themselves involved in a caper is predictable and tired for me at this point.

While crossovers were used in comics at that time (especially at Marvel--see Secret Wars II), a multi-title crossover on the scale of the Mutant Massacre (a title used in partial irony) was pretty new.
Based more on old movies than pop comics, Madripoor was both an attempt by Claremont to write the character in a setting he found fun, as well as to confound the fanboys who were just looking for "cool" action scenes.
All of the writers' (and some fans') fantasies came true: Cyclops was a villain, Jean Grey and Wolverine were a couple, Magneto and Rogue were married with a child, Doug Ramsey wasn't dead, and Kitty and Colossus were married, to name a few.

Moreover, Whedon himself is clearly excited about having the opportunity to write the X-Men, and his affection for the characters and their history is evident on every page.
Wisely concentrating on only a core team of 5 members (Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, Kitty Pryde, and Emma Frost), Whedon is having a field day reminding us of why the X-Men used to be THE superhero comic before floundering in a morass of excess titles, clunky crossovers, and an overloading of characters.
From Kitty explaining her mistrust of Emma with a reference to the classic X-Men#129 to her vocal disbelief and revulsion towards Frost’s teaching purview at Xavier’s school (“you teach ethics?”), Whedon deftly intertwines pathos, humor, and ambiguity to reinvigorate these characters without sacrificing their history and continuity.

Cyclops #1 (of 4) (Marvel Comics, $2.50) I had a mixed hope for this book - one the one hand, past X-solo mini-series have sucked, but this one has art by the long-lost Mark Texeira.
Cyclops has always come across as an afterthought, and while Vaughan takes a few steps towards fixing that, things that Cyclops says come across as overblown.
Vampirella #1 (Harris Comics, $2.95) I picked this up with hopes that Mark Millar would be able to work some magic with the title - the same magic that he pulled recently with books like Ultimate X-Men.

Being one of the first X-Men, I didn't honestly expect Marvel to have the guts, the courage of its convictions, to be strong and decent enough to stand by Cyclops' death.
If they had, then it would have proved that comics aren't cheap and cheesy, but mean something.
Let's face it, Cyclops will come back, he'll be tainted by the demons he fights inside for a while, then we'll all get back to normal (Superman changes to an energy being "forever", then is back to his old self within a year)
