In Music We Trust - Styx: Cyclorama
"Cyclorama" is Styx full circle, arriving some thirty years after their self-titled sleeper, and it's an album that boasts the confidence of top-level talent and also an unlikely continuity that's rarely plausible when so many new elements enter the equation.
Because of their ability to change from song to song, album to album, member to member, really, Styx can survive change better than most and lose little integrity in the process.
"Cyclorama," if not a wry inclination toward promoting essential health benefits of a beta carotene rich diet, is a highly photogenic glossy paged comeback record by a band with a point to prove and not in the slightest means low key.

Before singer/songwriter/guitarist Tommy Shaw arrived to aid Styx in their pursuit of the mainstream, they released four albums on indie label Wooden Nickel (distributed by RCA) between 1972 and 1974.
With original guitarist John Curulewski still on board, Styx had a harder edge and a more eclectic sound.
Those four albums, along with the rare outtake "Unfinished Song" (which was replaced by the song "Lies" on the original CD), are compiled here on two discs.

Now that Shaw has been appointed captain of the Styx ship, Cyclorama is expectedly more straight-ahead rock than anything he band has ever done, especially evident on such cuts as the album opener "Do Things My Way" and the goofy "Bourgeois Pig" (featuring special guest Billy Bob Thornton).
But Styx misses the mark badly by trying to update their sound on "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye," which is an obvious attempt at honing in on Sum 41 and blink-182 territory.
As evidenced by Cyclorama, DeYoung is just too big a missing piece of the Styx puzzle.
