  Cyclostomata - LoveToKnow 1911
CYCLOSTOMATA, or Marsipobranchii, a group of fishes including the ordinary lampreys and hagfish, and so called from the wide permanently gaping mouth which is without the hinged jaws characteristic of other vertebrates (Gnathostomata).
The class Cyclostomata consists of two orders, the Myxinoids (or Hyperotreti) and the Petromyzontes (or Hyperoartii), which, while showing sufficient resemblance in structure to warrant their inclusion in the same class, are yet marked off by such deep-seated differences as to indicate that they commenced to diverge from one another far back in evolutionary time.
The softness of the skeletal tissues and the absence of scales in Cyclostomata provide little opportunity for the preservation of fossil remains of this group, and no known fossils can be referred with certainty to the Cyclostomata.

Valentina I. Gontar. Evolutionary trends in Crisiidae (Cyclostomata, Bryozoa).
The family Crisiidae belonging to the order bryozoan Cyclostomata have vertical delicate branched calcareous colonies, whose branches are provided with chitinous articulations.
In Cyclostomata it may be of two types: holoancestrula and artroancenstrula (in crisiids).
It is important to note that the initial stages of growth in colonies in Cyclostomata maintain a consistent appearance except for crisiids and are called stage of stomatopore, originating from the name of the genus Stomatopora forming such colonies.

Extant agnathans are represented by hagfishes (Myxiniformes) and lampreys (Petromyzontiformes), frequently -grouped together within the Cyclostomata.
Whereas the recognition of the Gnathostomata as a clade is commonly acknowledged, a consensus has not been reached regarding whether or not Cyclostomata represents a clade.
In the present study we have used newly established sequences of the protein-coding genes of the mitochondrial DNA molecule of the hagfish to explore agnathan and gnathostome relationships.

Cyclostomata bryozoa are thought to reproduce via polyembryony, a clonal replication of a fertilized egg.
To test this hypothesis and to assess the impact of their reproductive strategy on the structure of populations, we isolated microsatellite markers in Crisia denticulata (Cyclostomata, Stenolemata), using an initial enrichment step with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers.
A total of nine microsatellites, one tetra- and eight dinucleoticles repeats were isolated; seven were found to be polymorphic in a test sample of 30 individuals, with allele numbers/locus varying from 2 to 6.

Another considerable innovation is the proposition to divide the class Pisces into the four groups of Leptocardia, Cyclostomata, Pisces, and Dipneusta.
As regards the establishment of a separate class for the Lancelet (Amphioxus), I think there can be little doubt of the propriety of so doing, inasmuch as it is far more different from all other fishes than they are from one another.
But considering the close relation of the Mudfish with the Ganoidei, and the wide differences between the Elasmobranchii and the Teleostei, I greatly doubt the propriety of separating the Dipneusta, as a class, from the other Pisces.

With the exception of one order of stenolaemates, the Tubuliporata or Cyclostomata, all of these Paleozoic bryozoan lineages were severely impacted in the Permian extinction: cryptostomates disappeared at the end of the Permian (245 million years ago), while a few other lineages lingered until the end of the Triassic, about 210 million years ago.
Tubuliporate bryozoans have survived to this day, and in fact underwent a remarkable radiation in the Cretaceous, but are no longer dominant today.
