The lower part of the bomblet is closed with a metallic plate pierced by a hole through which penetrates the point of a spring-loaded firing pin.
The explosion projects the pellets in a sun-burst pattern at an angle of about 20° with the horizontal to a distance of 15 metres; the pieces of the casing are propelled about 50 metres.
Like the pineapple, it consists of a hollow envelope 7 millimetres thick of the same alloy and is filled with 50 grammes of Cyclotol A3.

Patent 4764329: Producing explosive material in granular form
The method of claim 1 wherein said fluidized explosive is selected from the group consisting of TNT, cyclotol and composition B directed in fluidized form at about 180.degree.
Various explosive materials, including but not limited to trinitrotoluene (TNT), Cyclotol, Composition B and nitroguanidine, are generally produced in bulk quantities but are best utilized, for ordnance purposes in granular form.
Depending on the specific use at hand, it is important that the granules of explosive be of predictable and controlled size.

 Discovery of RDX
It is considered the most powerful military explosive, and has a tremendous force shattering effect from the sudden release of energy.
The most common mixes with RDX are Compositions A, B. and C, HBX, H-6, Cyclotol.
RDX is a synthetic substance, and is not found in nature.

 Explosives FYI
When combined with other explosives, RDX forms the basis for Composition A, Composition B, Composition C, HBS, H-6 and Cyclotol.
Cyclotol is used for shaped-charge bombs, special fragmentation projectiles and grenades.
Ammonium Nitrate (fertilizer) The purpose of including Ammonium Nitrate in the discussion of Explosives is to point out that a domestic or international terrorist does not need to obtain any of the earlier mentioned sophisticated explosive compounds to create a major terrorist event.

Hydrolysis experiments at Pantex have shown that cyclotol (70 percent RDX and 30 percent TNT) and tetrytol (70 percent tetryl and 30 percent TNT) reacted within 1 hour and 3 hours, respectively, in 6 to 12 percent caustic.
However, only a lower bound on the rate of tetrytol destruction is available, because no observations were made before 3 hours had elapsed.
Observations made after 1 hour for cyclotol showed that all solids had been consumed.

USING THE PAGOSA SIMULATOR TO STUDY OIL WELL PERFORATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The conical copper liners in the tiny perforators are 75 mils thick, having a base- to-apex height of 0.75 inch and a base radius of 0.34 inch.
The oil- bearing rock is modeled as quartz because of its similar mass density, and the high explosive in the perforators is cyclotol.
A simple elastic- plastic material response model is used for the copper and steel.

 BLU-97/B Combined Effects Bomb (CEB)
The body of the submunition is cylindrical in shape, approximately 20 centimeters long, and has a 6 centimeter diameter.
The original Cyclotol explosive has been replaced with PBXN-107 explosive in the IM BLU-97.
The BLU-97/B Combined Effects Bomb (CEB), effective against armor, personnel and material, contains a shaped charge, scored steel casing and zirconium ring for anti-armor, fragmentation and incendiary capability.

Remember both decoys were deliberately detonated several seconds BEFORE the primary charge, ensuring that investigators would be led in the “right” direction when conducting their inquiries after the event If the two decoys had been triggered AFTER the massive blast outside the Sari Club, nobody would have noticed them.
Before explosives “junkies” swarm all over me, yes I do know that RDX is one of the compounds used in the manufacture of C4 plastic explosive, but it is used far more widely in other explosives including [but not limited to] Compositions A and B, Cyclotol and HBX.
These compositions have wide ranging applications such as land mines, shaped-charges, missile warheads, underwater ordnance, and special fragmentation projectiles generally known as cluster bombs.

Gary, you said that the description (powder-like) of the hexogen was wrong and you later posted (I can't find your exact post as I believe it was deleted along with all of HL Shancken's posts) that hexogen "is not a powder".
As a military explosive, RDX can be used alone as a base charge for detonators or mixed with another explosive such as TNT to form cyclotols, which produce a bursting charge for aerial bombs, mines, and torpedoes.
Common military uses of RDX have been as an ingredient in plastic bonded explosives, or plastic explosives which have been used as explosive fill in almost all types of munitions compounds.

The Chapman-Jouguet pressures of RDX, TNT, 64/36 Composition B, and 77/23 Cyclotol have been measured by determining initial free-surface velocity as a function of thickness for 24ST aluminum plates in contact with the detonating explosive.
The pressures determined for RDX, TNT, 64/36 Composition B, and 77/23 Cyclotol are 338, 189, 292, and 313 kilobars, respectively.
