Internally the cylinder head has passages for the fuel/air mixture to travel to the inlet valves from the intake manifold, for exhaust gases to travel from the exhaust valves to the exhaust manifold, and for antifreeze (coolant) to cool the head and engine.
A V engine usually has two cylinder heads, one at each end of the V, although Volkswagen, for instance, has recently produced a V6 called the VR6 where the angle between the cylinder banks is so narrow that it utilizes a single head.
The cylinder head is key to the performance of the internal combustion engine, as the shape of the combustion chamber, inlet passages and ports (and to a lesser extent the exhaust) determines a major portion of the volumetric efficiency and compression ratio of the engine.

Laser-gas delivery systems for all applications, including 24/7 operation
Since cylinder switchover is accomplished automatically by the manifold, cylinders in a bank are exhausted uniformly, which results in improved gas use, higher gas purity, and lower costs.
Bank 2 then will gradually deplete each time bank 1 is replaced, until there is not enough gas in bank 2 to effect changeover.
A logic-controlled manifold is designed to sense cylinder bank pressures and to switch automatically to a full bank of cylinders with no disruption in delivery pressure or flow rate when one cylinder bank is depleted.

The intake and exhaust valves were located on opposite sides of the chamber at 90° to the cylinder bank axis, so separate individual rocker shaft assemblies (two on each head: intake and exhaust) were used to control all sixteen valves by the same camshaft.
The cylinders were placed in two banks (rows) of four cylinders each, arranged (as is common practice) at 90° to each other; each is 45° from the vertical axis.
The intake and exhaust valves were located on opposite sides of the chamber at 90° to the cylinder bank (directly across from each other), so separate individual rocker shaft assemblies (two on each head: intake and exhaust) were necessary for all valves to be controlled by the same camshaft.

While it far surpasses most other methods in obtaining optimal horsepower from a motor, it won't give a 4 cylinder engine the torque characteristics of an 8 cylinder.

Cylinders are spaced on 111.8 mm (4.40") centers on each bank and the centers of cylinders on the two banks are offset to accommodate the two connecting rods on each crank journal.
V6 is unique among all Chevy motors since the right hand cylinder bank is offset ahead of the left hand cylinder bank when viewed from the rear of the engine.
Cylinders are numbered 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 from the front on the right and left banks respectively.

Cylinders in each bank are individually numbered and identified as A1, A2, A3, …, B1, B2, B3, …, etc. Paxman's long-standing practice was to view its engines from the free end, calling the left bank 'A' and the nearest cylinder A1.
Good distribution of fuel and charge air within the cylinder is aided by the shape of the cylinder head and piston crown which are designed to create 'swirl'.
The small end of one rod is attached to a piston in an A bank cylinder, the small end of the other being attached to the piston in the opposite B bank cylinder.

A Garrett T25 turbocharger is used for each cylinder bank, mounted on a short cast iron manifold at each rear side of the engine bay.
Each cast iron manifold maintains separate gas streams for cylinders 1 and 4, and 2 and 3 (RH cylinder bank), and cylinders 5 and 8, and 6 and 7 (LH bank) up to the turbocharger turbine intake, in order to optimize pressure wave effects.
The coolant supply is tapped off the front end of the cylinder block outboard water jacket, and is returned to the rear end of the inboard jacket.

The vertical fan (see earlier update) draws in air from in front of the motor, and diverts it down between and around the cylinders, which are finned to add heat dissipation area.
If these diverters were not in place, the air would go straight out the bottom, causing the bottom sides of the cylinders to be much hotter than the upper sides (that's not good).

For atmospheric air, the secondary resonance pulses would help charge the cylinders, but with forced induction, the high density air being force through these passages will not be able to achieve the secondary resonance, and will lose a lot of pressure trying to squeeze through the restrictive passages.
