Semicircular plug for preventing leakage of oil in a cylinder head of an overhead cam shaft engine - Patent 4227705
The present invention relates to a semicircular plug adapted to be fitted to a cylinder head of an overhead cam shaft engine for preventing leakage of lubricating oil from the cylinder head.
A semicircular recess 3 is formed in either end 1a of the cylinder head 1 in axial alignment with the bearings 2 for passing the cam shaft through the bearings 2.
Therefore, when the semicircular plug 4 is pressed by a cylinder head cover (not shown) against the cylinder head 1 through a gasket 5, it tends to move out of position and develop clearances such as those shown at C.sub.1 and C.sub.2 in FIG.

  Cylinder Head
This head is not the applicable for the street since it needs different intake and exhaust manifolds and of course is not smog legal.
On the head side, it is possible to deform or collapse the structural "column" This is not likely with an Iron head, but I had great concerns with the aluminum alloy head that I use now.
The 3.8 heads underwent serious combustion chamber modification and I used the stock valves in it.

Preventing Cylinder Head Gasket and Cooling System Failures   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A cylinder head gasket is required to effect a seal between the cylinder head and block of a gasoline or diesel engine.
Aluminum cylinder heads with Siamese exhaust valves (such as the Chrysler 2.2L and Honda 1.3L and 1.5L) seem to be especially vulnerable to localized overheating in the area between adjacent exhaust valves.
If a head gasket has failed as a result of severe engine overheating, both the face of the cylinder head and block deck should be checked for warpage — and resurfaced if needed to restore flatness prior to replacing the head gasket.

The Cylinder Head - Engine Masters Magazine
Porting the cylinder head returns the most performance for the dollar spent, especially if the camshaft and intake manifold are also changed.
The three areas where a cylinder head can be ported are: the bowl (which is the area behind the valves); the runners; and the combustion chamber.
Not only should aluminum cylinder heads be checked, but also cast iron heads that have been excessively ported, to ensure no coolant leaks into the combustion chamber, from grinding into the water jacket.

Cylinder Head Combustion Chamber Volume - Circle Track Magazine
If the combustion chamber volumes are different from cylinder to cylinder, the energy they produce will be different from cylinder to cylinder.
In addition to checking the heads, Mondello made it very clear that connecting rod center-to-center length should be checked to ensure all the rods are the same.
If the block is not machined correctly, you will not only have uneven volumes in the cylinders due to the deck height variance from cylinder to cylinder (at which point the chamber volume becomes a moot point), you could also have issues with the head-to-manifold interface.

After evosport pulled the 3.0's cylinder head, we discovered it was simply a broken copper head gasket--the cylinder head and block are fine.
I had the cylinder head rebuilt once before, and while the head was off I could see the centralized oil deposits on the pistons, indicating most likely a leak from the top end.
Once the original cylinder head is reinstalled, I foresee a lower octane requirement for high-boost runs, since there won't be oil deposits present to heat up and predetonate the fuel.

Mopar Cylinder Head Selection - Mopar Muscle Magazine
When Chrysler engineered their wedge heads in the '50s, they were lighter and more economical to manufacture than the first-generation Hemi cylinder heads.
The early wedge heads had small valves and inefficient combustion chambers, but with the popularity of racing in the early '60s, the engineers at Chrysler pooled their resources to design the Max wedge cylinder head.
These heads are a good choice for a stock engine or mild street engine and respond well to porting, but valve and port size limit their power potential.

Milling or "shaving" of a cylinder head (remove the raised ridge that mates with the head gasket) is performed with a flycutter and the head clamped in a milling machine vise that's fastened to the table of a milling machine.
First, securely clamp the head with the fins upward in the vise and use a couple of parallels to insure that the head is exactly at a 90° angle with the spindle.
The ideal location of the spark plug in the cylinder head is in the area between the piston and exhaust valve.

 Aluminum Cylinder Head
According to KRE, their new cylinder head was designed to fit the market between the stock D-port iron head and the Edelbrock aluminum head.
As you can see in the factory head design, the chamber does not feature the swirl-inducing heart shape, plug placement is nearer the perimeter of the chamber and the plug bias is toward the intake valve.
For example, if the heads are ported to flow 300 cfm at.500 lift on the intake, the resulting flow ratio with the untouched exhaust port at 226 cfm would be 75 percent.

Secrets of the Cylinder Head - Tech - Sport Compact Car Magazine
In cylinder head porting, generally, the intake and the exhaust ports of the head are carefully reshaped by hand.
Heads with valves near the periphery of the cylinder often want the ports biased toward the center of the bore to reduce the cylinder walls shrouding of the airflow out of the ports.
Heads with valves close to the periphery of the cylinder or engines with deep combustion chambers and small bores are prone to situation.

In essence, the Vortec head uses the iron LT1 chamber intake and exhaust ports in a standard-water-flow iron head.

Buying Vortec heads used is risky unless you know what vehicle they came out of, what part number the head is, and what modifications where made to the head to make it that part number.
