Masley's Discography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Cymbalom, flutes, synthesizer and sampled percussion in a more elaborately produced setting.
Astonishingly broad receiving antennae for improvisational inspiration: cymbalom, cello, and a variety of flutes and panpipes.
Primarily solo cymbalom, with a short sonic coffee break on Pan-Timbre-Reen and panpipes, this work alternates between catchy arrangements in a modal vein and conscious attempts to set aside familiar harmonic language.

  Cymbalom - Antwoorden.org

Cymbalom, hammer dulcimer, Michael Masley, artist general, unique plaucked bowed musical instrument
The cymbalom is a Hungarian hammer dulcimer, which is traditionally played with two wooden "hammers" which resemble curved chopsticks.
Michael Masley plays the Cymbalom with his own invention, a system of eight "bowhammers" and thumbpicks, allowing him to pluck, bow, or strike the strings in any combination, and resulting in a sound wholly his own.
A small cymbalom was also later produced in Ukraine during the 1950's that came with attachable legs and dampers but could be carried more easily than a concert instrument.

And of course, the constant improvisational interplay between the cymbalom and the accordion.

Over the years Masley has developed the capacity to combine any two of the pluck, bow, or string attacks on the taut wires of the cymbalom, and says he may be “working the rest of my life” on getting all three going in sync.
Playing cymbalom, Lakota flute, and water pipes for a couple of movie minutes, Masley made a few bucks and saw his musical contribution excerpted for use on CBS’ broadcast of the 1994 Winter Olympics, on NBC’s “Entertainment Tonight,” and in an HBO special.
But for now, the cymbalom’s unique bells-and-shadows sound can still be heard ringing out over the sidewalks and plazas of the San Francisco Bay area.

This instrumentation, particularly the strings and the Eastern European-flavored cymbalom (related to the hammer dulcimer), give Blast a sound that is much closer to a contemporary chamber ensemble than avant rock band.
The ensemble moves into extended-form, episodic territory with the guitarist's 'Visceral Ooze.' This piece begins slowly and mysteriously with gradually escalating tension, pitting slowly evolving horn and reed lines against bumps and bursts from the rhythm section.
Violin and cymbalom are added to the mix, and the gathering energy breaks through into an effervescent groove fueled by percolating marimba and a pumping guitar and bass riff.

Although it has no form, it is not just random sounds in a Jewish mode--the musician works with very particular references to Jewish prayer and East European laments.
Typically it is performed on violin (Yiddish "fidl"), cymbalom (Yiddish "tsimbl") or clarinet, though has been done on everything from banjoes to xylophones.
Since klezmorim often had to perform for long events, it was difficult to keep the instruments in tune, especially the many-stringed cymbalom.

 Barry Cleveland: Fiery forays
He played a bowhammer cymbalom solo on “Tongue of Fire” when the album was originally recorded, and on “Dark Energy,” towards the end.
He also played three of his original instruments—Reed Slide, Lakota Slide and Phenix—on “Obsidian Night.” Masley’s parts were entirely improvised, and he nailed most of them on the first take, which is particularly impressive when you consider that he was recorded in a shower stall to get a natural reverb effect.
We recorded additional guitar and cymbalom tracks, and later Bob Stohl and Kat Epple added several types of flutes, Lyricon and a variety of bells, cymbals and other light percussion.

CD Baby: ART BAILEY'S ORKESTRA POPILAR: Branch from the Tree
The sound of the ensemble owes more to the urgent, fiery sound of Romanian string and cymbalom ensembles than to Jewish-American wedding bands of the 40s and 50s, and draws from the cross-pollinated Romanian/Jewish repertoire, as well as Bailey’s own original compositions.
With the absence of the American dance band drum set and clarinet, the group takes klezmer music out of the realm of the archetypical 1950s klezmer sound most listeners are familiar with, and puts it in a setting that is reminiscent of an even earlier time in the recorded history of Jewish music.
The idea to form the group initially was inspired by the recordings of Joseph Moskowitz, the Romanian cymbalom master who settled in New York City around 1913 and was owner and operator of the Moskowitz Wine Cellar on Rivington Street in lower Manhattan.
