  Cynewulf (Poet) - LoveToKnow 1911
Cynewulf's unquestioned poems show that he was a scholar, familiar with Latin and with religious literature, and they display much metrical skill and felicity in the use of traditional poetic language; but of the higher qualities of poetry they give little evidence.
Cynewulf's celebration of a midland saint is the strongest of the arguments that have been urged against his Northumbrian origin; but this consideration is insufficient to outweigh the probability derived from the linguistic evidence.
Cynewulf was indeed probably a Northumbrian churchman, but it is unlikely that there were not many Northumbrian churchmen bearing this common name; and as the bishop is not recorded to have written anything, the identification is at best an unsupported possibility.

§6. Cynewulf: His Personality. IV. Old English Christian Poetry. Vol. 1. From the Beginnings to the Cycles of ...
Turning to Cynewulf and the poems that may be, or have been, attributed to him, we are on somewhat safer ground.
Whether or not Cynewulf is to be identified with this ecclesiastic, there is no doubt that the assumption of Mercian origin would do away with one or two difficulties which the assumption of Northumbrian origin in the narrower sense leaves unsolved.
Further, assuming Guthlac B to be by Cynewulf, 9 we may note the fact that the fen-journey of the original has been transformed into a sea-voyage, and this would appear to tell against an East Anglian authorship.

§13. The Schools of Caedmon and Cynewulf. IV. Old English Christian Poetry. Vol. 1. From the Beginnings to the ...
Both schools of thought are Christian, not rarely even monkish; both writers, if not in equal measure, are sons of their age and palpably inheritors of a philosophy of life pagan in many respects.
For Cynewulf, “earth’s crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God”; it is, perhaps, only in portions of Exodus and in passages of Genesis B that the Divine immanence in nature is obviously felt by the Caedmonian scop.
The greatest distinction between the one school and the other, is due, however, to the degree in which Cynewulf and his group show their power of assimilating foreign literary influences.

 Cynewulf
That certain Anglo-Saxon poems still extant were written by one Cynewulf is beyond dispute, for the author has signed his name in them by spelling it out in runic letters which may be so read as to make sense in the context of the poem.
Four poems, the "Christ", the "Elene", the "Juliana" and the "Fates of the Apostles" may be attributed to Cynewulf with certainty in virtue of their runic signatures.
This also is consequently by most authorities assigned to Cynewulf, though Knapp, its latest editor (Boston, 1906), regards it as the work of an imitator and possibly disciple of Cynewulf.

Cynewulf's poem "Juliana" is also preserved in The Exeter Book and is a poetical account of the acts of martyrdom of St. Juliana.
A fifth poem attributed to Cynewulf is "Dream of the Rood." This work is an early example of a style known as "dream vision," a style that later became popular in Middle English literature.
Cynewulf may also be the author of several other works including "The Wanderer," "Guthlac," "The Phoenix," "Physiologus," "The Ruin," "Wulf and Eadwacer" and "The Wife's Complaint (Lament)" but there is nothing more definite than style to associate these works with him.

Cynewulf is generally recognised as one of the two named Anglo-Saxon poets whose work survives in the vernacular, the other being Cædmon.
Arguments for Cynewulf’s date and place of origin are based primarily on his dialect, the spelling of his name, and the sources of his work.
However, the older spelling is “Cyniwulf”, and the change to “Cynewulf” was dated by Kenneth Sisam to the mid-eighth century south of the Humber, and to about the mid-ninth century in Northumbria.

Whether the first poem of the Exeter Book is in fact one with three sections or rather three individual poems has been the subject of much dispute, as has the question of the author.
Even though Cynewulf solves this question for the second part with his signature, this does not necessarily prove that all three parts stem from this author.
And E.V.K. Dobbie states, "the question whether we have here three separate poems on somewhat related topics or three parts of a single poem approached from several angles, is a distinction with very little difference."

But he having understood that the king was gone, thinly attended, on a visit to a lady at Merton, (28) rode after him, and beset him therein; surrounding the town without, ere the attendants of the king were aware of him.

In the essay that follows, Wilson studies the Christ in detail and claims, in contrast to the conclusion reached by some critical scholarship, that the poem is arguably the work of a single author.
In the essay that follows, Kennedy reviews what is known about Cynewulfs identity and the four poems signed with his name and suggests that the scholastic religious tradition which directs the primary content of Cynewulfs poetry is interlaced with more "romantic" overtones.
In the following essay, Wittig claims that the critical "dissatisfaction" with Cynewulf's Juliana neglects the poem's successful representation of the significance of the saint's passion.

Cynewulf then ruled for 29 years, until he was himself slain by Sigeberht's brother Cyneheard (see entry under 786).
In the first couple of years of his reign, Cynewulf witnesses a charter of Æthelbald of Mercia in 757 (S 96), and his own earliest charter is confirmed by Offa of Mercia in c.758 (S 265); this may imply some West Saxon dependence on the Mercians.
Cynewulf attended the meeting with the papal legates with Offa in 786, but the report of the legates gives us no hint as to the relations between Offa and Cynewulf at that point.

Cynewulf is the only Old English poet known by name of whom any undisputed writings are extant (rather than being quoted by others).
Though details of his life are lacking, Cynewulf was probably a Northumbrian churchman born in the 8th century.
Unlike Caedmon of Whitby, the first known Christian poet, Cynewulf seems to have been a man of education, familiar with the Latin liturgy and literature of the church of his day.
