Cynic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whichever of these explanations is correct, it is noticeable that the Cynics agreed in taking a dog as their common badge or symbol, as early as the tombstone of Diogenes of Sinope.
The leading earlier Cynics were Antisthenes, Diogenes of Sinope, Crates of Thebes, and Zeno; in the later Roman period, the chief names are Demetrius (the friend of Seneca), Oenomaus and Demonax.
The very essence of their philosophy was the negation of the graces of social courtesy; it was impossible to "return to nature" in the midst of a society clothed in the accumulated artificiality of evolved convention without shocking the ingrained sensibilities of its members.

It was certainly true that at the time the band's one and only record came out, titled 'Focus', via Roadrunner in 1993, the extreme metal scene, or more simply the Death Metal scene as it was then, was not ready for a band like Cynic.
Although Carcass were also to become something of a technical band evolved from more primeval beginnings, it was Death's almost wholesale change of direction on the astounding 'Human' album in 1991 that provoked acclaim and derision in equal measures.
And Cynic were all the time using frenzy and apparent musical peace to create harmony and calm in the listener.

Cynic was formed in November of 1987 by guitarist/vocals Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert.
When Cynic was rehearsing for their Roadrunner release in Miami, the hurricane struck and completely destroyed their rehearsal space and equipment, and also leveled Jason's house.
Simple, the band broke up...It became apparent during the writing process for the 2nd LP that all members were going in different directions sonically.

 [No title]
They started as an unnamed band consisting of Seamus Kelly banging the strings of the guitar he'd just bought (which he had no clue of how to play) and singing (yes, he was singing, that was not a dying cat) and Evan Madden masterfully pounding away on his drum set.
As the show approached, the boys of Cynic began to fear their nonconformist decision, and within a few weeks of their ground breaking decision to remain a two-piece Cynic was a four-piece.
Everyone was excited for the band's future, Troy decided to have a more permanent tenure in the band, and they planned to practice and play throughout the summer.

To many, Cynic’s lone album Focus not only represented the absolute height of death metal never to be reached again, but a life-altering experience that would be forever embedded in their consciousness.
The band’s intention of writing the most non-pop structured songs, although technically innovative and theoretically impressive, rendered their music impossible to enjoy.
If you’re lucky enough to have heard bootlegs of the band’s gigs around this time, you would undoubtedly note 1) the absolute perfection with which the band reproduced the songs live and 2) the palpable division they created amongst the audience.

 OSI (band) -
OSI is an American progressive metal band formed by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos in 2003.
Sean Malone was recruited to fill the role of bassist and Chapman Stick player for the band, and the only position left open was that of a vocalist.
Daniel Gildenlow of Pain of Salvation was seriously considered for the job, but as Moore was tracking his own scratch vocals in developing the songs, it became obvious that the project should continue with Moore singing.

Cynic's early history was as a more or less standard Floridian death metal band (at that time, featuring bassist Tony Choy, later of Atheist and Pestilence).
By 1993, the band was experimenting with progressive songwriting, fusion influences, guitar synths, and altered vocal effects, all of which can be heard on Focus, now regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal.
However, the band decided to break up soon after the release of that album.

 CYNIC's Focus: thoughts?
I always thought Cynic was a prog-metal band with lots of odd time signatures and complex songs, but this album proves the opposite for me.
Cynic's Focus is the very definition of what "progressive" music is. They are all awesome musicians, and the songs are fantastic.
Luckily the bass player in one of my old bands lent me his copy and to this day have refused to give it back.
