Age of the Goddess   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
It is believed that the Greek god Zeus honored his nurse Cynosura with a place in the stars of Ursa Minor because she nursed him in a cave on the top of Mount Ida. Cynosura would spin in a wild fashion while clashing symbols in an attempt to conceal Zeus' location from his father Cronus.
Cynosura was translated as "Dog's Tail" but that may refer to the star Polaris and the fact that the constellation of the bear is associated with the legends of Callisto as an aspect of Artemis who often hunted with hounds.
The bear Cynosura was also referred to as Melissa, who was an aspect of Artemis and Callisto.

It is also very close to the north celestial pole, making it the current north pole star.
Much more rarely, it is sometimes called Cynosura.
"Polaris" comes from Stella Polaris, the Latin form of its common name "Pole Star." The Greek name Cynosura (Κυνόσουρα) means "tail of the dog" and is the source of the English word cynosure.

Another says that the constellations of the Great Bear and Lesser Bear (Ursa Minor) were Helice and Cynosura, the Cretan nurses of Zeus.
Though, the Roman writer Hyginus had also said that it was not a constellation of a bear at all, but a constellation of a Wagon called Plaustrum.
Cynosura was one of the nurses of Zeus in Crete, who was transformed into a constellation called Ursa Minor or the Lesser Bear.

Cynosura is the most widespread, and varies from north to south.
The major problem of the entire study has been the distinction between cynosura and petechialis, which are narrowly sympatric in eastern TX and western LA. The co-occurrence of these two species in a few places suggests that they are distinct species, but difficult to distinguish, as all eastern petechialis lack antenodal spots.
The distinction is made mainly on the basis of the shape of the cercus, which is more massive in petechialis, and in a slight difference in the proportions of the basal segments of the abdomen.

Enclosures were exposed to combinations of high and low densities and presence/absence of a second year class E. cynosura predator.
Density is probably a very important factor influencing the voltinism of E. cynosura at Bays Mounain Lake.

Then the captains, believing all that the messenger had said, proceeded to land a large body of Persian troops on the islet of Psyttaleia, which lies between Salamis and the mainland; after which, about the hour of midnight, they advanced their western wing towards Salamis, so as to inclose the Greeks.
At the same time the force stationed about Ceos and Cynosura moved forward, and filled the whole strait as far as Munychia with their ships.
This advance was made to prevent the Greeks from escaping by flight, and to block them up in Salamis, where it was thought that vengeance might be taken upon them for the battles fought near Artemisium.

The number of proper names for stars is greater than the number of stars with proper names, as many different cultures named stars independently.
For example, the star known as Polaris has also at various times and places been known by the names Alruccabah, Angel Stern, Cynosura, the Lodestar, Mismar, Navigatoria, Phoenice, the Pole Star, the Star of Arcady, Tramontana and Yilduz.
With the advent of the increased light-gathering abilities of the telescope, many more stars became visible, far too many to all be given names.

According to the classicists, this constellation represents Arcas, son of Callisto and Jupiter (see that story on the Ursa Major page).
Other writers state that it is meant to represent Cynosura, one of the Nymphs of Crete who reared the infant Jupiter; the other Helice, being Ursa Major.
Cynosure means; an object that serves as a focal point of attention and admiration, or something that serves to guide.

Oxfordian Myths: Was Burghley Called "Polus"?
This is from a poem by Edward Grant on the bear in Leicester's emblem:
"Cynosura" is the constellation Ursa Minor (which is close to the pole star), and Leicester, according to Grant, is the British Cynosura.
If Grant had been writing about Burghley, then his use of the adjective "polaris" would probably count as well with Oxfordians, although, once again, there is no nick-naming involved:

Thus, Ursa Minor, the Little or Lesser Bear, symbolized the less popular, Spiritual, Creation, and Its Divine Wisdom, to which the Israelites aspired.

From some such cause [as is described below under Canis Major, where Canis, the Dog-star, is considered a symbol of the creative Logos, Memra or Word of God], then, Cynosura [the "Dog's Tail"], the second creation, is set in the firmament as an image of a creation by the Logos.
