A pseudonymous remailer or nym server, as opposed to an anonymous remailer, is an Internet software program designed to allow people to write anonymous messages on Usenet newsgroups and send anonymous email under a pseudonym.
Unlike a purely anonymous remailers, it assigns its users a user name, and it keeps a database of instructions on how to return messages to the real user.
The Penet remailer, which lasted from 1993 to 1996, was a popular pseudonymous remailer.

I think most remailer and nym users are well acquainted with this behavior, to the point where they take it for granted, and I think some of those who work in providing remailer services or software are unaware of the problem simply because they don't actually use the services extensively.
Remailer and client programmers, and remailer operators, need to do everything possible to improve the reliability of their systems and reduce lost mail, and to insure their connectivity to other remailers.
Remailer clients need the (optional) ability to connect to the remailers directly, without going through SMTP and other servers, and need to receive immediate feedback that the remailer received the data.
