Cyphomandra is a genus of about 50 species of shrubs and small trees found from southern Mexico through South America.
Cyphomandra trees were in flower and producing immature fruit in mid-August.
The anthers of other species of Cyphomandra are variously described as being white or yellow, yellowish violet, purplish, pale yellow with purple spots, etc.; none are described as being bright yellow (Bohs, 1986).

First, an attempt was made to induce an increase in fruit size by grafting between tomato and Cyphomandra.
A large number of reciprocal grafts using both pimpinellifolium and an esculentum variety with Cyphomandra were made.
To data there is no evidence that Cyphomandra has any influence on fruit size of the grafted tomatoes or on their progeny.

Molecular data indicate that the Cyphomandra clade forms a well-supported monophyletic group, but its sister group is still unclear.
ITS data support the hypothesis that the Bolivian species S. roseum, S. unilobum, and S. maternum are the closest wild relatives of the tree tomato, S. betaceum.

The tree tomato Cyphomandra betacea, is an unusual large shrub native to Peru and is grown by some hobbyists here in South Florida.
It is more happy, though, at higher elevations than sea level and although sometimes it will grow well, it doesn't form large quantities of fruit here in Florida.
