  Cypriniform
The Cypriniformes are an order of ray-finned fish, including the minnows and some related families.
However, so defined the Cypriniformes are paraphyletic, and the orders Gonorhynchiformes, Characiformes (characins and allies), and Gymnotiformes (knifefishes and electric eels) have been separated out.
Aside from the features the share with the rest of the Ostariophysi, of which the Weberian apparatus[?] is the most notable, the Cypriniformes are distinguished by having a single dorsal fin (most of the others have a second, fleshy adipose fin) and by having teeth in the throat rather than the mouth, called pharyngeal teeth[?].

The clanwilliam redfin is classified as an endangered species due to the fact that its estimated area of occurence is less than 5000 km², it is known to exist at no more than five locations, and continuing decline is projected for extent of occurence and area of habitat.
It is classified as a critically endangered species due to a projected reduction of at least 80% of the wild common carp population over the next ten years based on a decline in area of occupancy and introduced pollutants, parasites, or other threats.

Harris Lands Key Role in International Effort to Understand Gene Function
In a joint effort involving 27 scientists worldwide, UA is participating in a venture designed to define the phylogeny – the genetic relationships between organisms and how they are believed to have evolved through history – and develop classifications for a group of fish known as Cypriniformes.
Researchers in the project, known as the Cypriniformes Tree of Life Project, will link, for example, with other researchers participating in an effort to sequence the complete genome of the zebra fish.
Cypriniformes, an order of freshwater fish, includes more than 5,500 species, described and un-described, including minnows, suckers, loaches and algae eaters.

In addition to these taxa researchers from the USA and China are examining morphological variation and taxonomic diversity of fossil Cypriniformes.
For more information on the taxa that are currently identified for study in morphological and molecular analyses you can view our current list at Neontological Taxon List.
By contributing important species to this project you not only advance our understanding of these amazing fishes but you may also qualify as a contributing author to one or more of the publications or presentations on the phylogeny or evolutionary diversity of the order or a subgrouping within the order.

 Petfrd.com - Interrelationships of Cypriniformes
Fishes of the order Cypriniformes are almost completely restricted to freshwater bodies and number > 3400 species placed in 5 families, each with poorly defined subfamilies and/or tribes.
The resultant phylogenies strongly supported monophyly of the Cypriniformes as well as that of the families Cyprinidae, Catostomidae, and a clade comprising Balitoridae + Cobitidae, with the 2 latter loach families being reciprocally paraphyletic.
Although all of the data sets yielded nearly identical tree topologies with regard to the shallower relationships, deeper relationships among the 4 major clades (the above 3 major clades plus Gyrinocheilidae, represented by a single species Gyrinocheilus aymonieri in this study), were incongruent depending on the data sets.
