Killifish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A killifish is any of various small, mainly oviparous (egg-laying) cyprinodont fish (order Cyprinodontiformes, family Cyprinodontidae).
Although killifish is sometimes used as an English equivalent to Cyprinodontidae, some species belonging to this family have their own common names, such as the pupfish and the mummichog.
Killifish are found mainly in fresh or brackish waters in the Americas, as far south as Argentina and as far north as southern Ontario.

A killifish is one of a large group of fish called Cyprinodontidae or tooth carps.
The Cyprinodontidae group includes the anableps, the silversides, the live bearing tooth carps and the egg laying tooth carps.
They are often referred to as egg-laying tooth carps to differentiate them from their closest relatives live-bearing tooth carps being guppies, mollies etc).

We used allozymes encoded by 32 gene loci in 12 species of Cyprinodon (Cyprinodontidae) to examine the evolution of the Cyprinodon nevadensis complex, a group of four species (7 extant subspp.) in the Death Valley System of California and Nevada.
Such an event would explain conflicting phylogenetic statements from allozymes and mtDNA, as well as a variety of additional observations on variation in the western pupfishes.
