Inactive mining industry, besides causing degradation of the region, is creating a serious problems for the whole ecosystem of the country and the Mediterranean Sea as well.
In certain of the mines, where the pits are shallow, during heavy rainfall there is flooding with the acid water of the pit overflowing and polluting the sea and water systems nearby.

 What is CMC?
CMC, Cyprus Mines Corporation, established according to the codes of the New York State in 1916.
In 1919, CMC built a small jetty at Yeşilyurt and used the jetty at Gemikonağı, which was originally built for exporting citrus of the Lefke area, to export its mine ore to European Countries.
CMC’s abandoned industrial site is composed of a variety of different minor sites, each of which was used for different stages of the mining, loading, transporting, filtering and smelting facility.

The open cast mining and refinery operations resulted in the accumulation of chemical wastes in high concentrations exceeding standards; copper from floatation tanks, cyanur from gold mining, 25-30% sulphur from pyrite tanks resulted in soil, sea and ground water pollution and air pollution in summers, due to the heat, forming sulphur gases and mining dust.

The mines were situated on the Greek speaking side and the yards and jetties for export of the copper pyrites at Xeros and Karavostasi in the north side and partly along the UN ‘no go’ dividing line.
CMC No. 4, a squat 0-8-2T Baldwin 60344/27, is the one remaining steam loco at Xeros dumped under a hillside and devoid of all plates, but its yellow livery and insignia making identification easy.
