Cyprus has been well visited by birders and there is plenty of literature covering the main spots.
The most controversial conservation issue on Cyprus is hunting, with certain days set aside for shooting and plenty evidence to suggest that outlawed hunting methods such as liming and netting of birds is still being carried out on a reasonable scale.
The large warbler most commonly seen in wooded areas on the south coast, such as the tall shrubs along the nature trail at Germasogeia Reservoir, the eucalyptus groves near Phassouri, the fruit trees in Paphos campground and the juniper scrub at cape Greco.

There are six type of snakes in Cyprus, of which three are poisonous: Only one of these, the blunt-nosed viper can be dangerous to man. The other two poisonous snakes of the island are the slender cat snake and the Montpellier snake.
Cyprus is important from an ornithological point of view because not only do nearly 200 species occur as regular passage migrants, but 90 species winter here as well.
This is a characteristic bird of the Cyprus scrub vegetation and in spring and summer the male may be easily seen standing on the top of thorn bushes, etc. singing.

Cyprus pied wheatear  :  seen mainly in the west where it was abundant away from the coast.  Particularly large numbers around the Evretou reservoir.
Cyprus warbler  :  relatively difficult to find but patience was rewarded with good views of three males and a female on the cliffs above Quarry beach on 26th.
Cyprus coal tit  :  abundant in the Troodos.

Cyprus has two recognised endemic bird species and at least four endemic sub-species, meaning that these are either found or breed only in Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.
The first of these, the Cyprus warbler (Sylvia melanothorax) will be familiar to most as it is the bird featured on the current ten pound note.
The Cyprus (pied) wheatear (Oenanthe cypriaca) was, until recently, seen as a race of the pied wheatear (Oenanthe pleschanka) but is now recognised as a full species.

Cyprus is under increased pressure to enforce its bird protection laws as it joined the EU in May 2004 and because of Bern Convention Recommendation No 90 (2001) on the catching, killing or trading of protected birds in Cyprus.
This was adopted by 45 nations in response to a case that the RSPB and BirdLife Cyprus took to the Bern Convention against the governments of Cyprus and the UK (the latter in relation to the Sovereign Base Areas).
BirdLife Cyprus is monitoring illegal trapping, raising public awareness, publishing educational materials, and encouraging the Cyprus Government to comply fully with the Birds Directive and Bern Convention.

Trapping songbirds has been illegal in Cyprus for more than 30 years, but fines are low compared with money to be made supplying the songbirds to local restaurants, where birds can sell for two pounds (US$3.60) or more each.
Two of the species often caught in mist nets are Cypriot endemics, the Cyprus warbler, Sylvia melanothorax, and the Cyprus wheatear, Oenanthe cypriaca.
The RSPB and BirdLife Cyprus conduct surveillance in the areas where the illegal activities are most widespread.

Fan-tailed Warbler [Zitting Cisticola] (Cisticola juncidis): Several in grassland around Paphos on 18th, at Paphos and Phassouri reedbed on 19th, several in fields near Paphos on 20th, a few at odd sites on 21st to 24th.
Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon): Two singing from deep in reeds at the Asprokremnos pools on 21st and 23rd.
Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus): 3+ on the Paphos headland on 18th and one in the Avakas Gorge on 22nd.

The reed gave a lot of singing Reed Warblers, but the really interesting place in our eyes where when we took the track threw the reeds that ended on the northern shore of the salt lake, which is a flat sandy area with halophytes.
Even on the top we had sightings of Cyprus Wheatear, proving that this is a species, which is really hard to miss on a trip to Cyprus.

I had never visited Cyprus before and, on the basis of a week in Paphos in March, I would strongly recommend it.
The week was rapidly approaching its end, and I had still not seen the two 'common' endemic birds Cyprus warbler and wheatear.
After a short while I located two singing Cyprus warblers but it was about an hour before we had some rather distant views of a male Cyprus wheatear, formerly considered to be a distinctive subspecies of pied wheatear.

Cyprus, the olive groves near the Baths of Aphrodite on the Akamas Peninsula are a significant migrant trap.
Cyprus (or at least the Greek part of it) is a largely hilly land of mimosa and carob trees, scattered ruins of various civilisations, huge British military bases where the Red Arrows practise, deserted Turkish villages, and Keo.
We have chosen this resort on the basis of its location in a small village close to the birding hot spots of Evretou dam, Bath of Aphrodite, Neo Chorio and Polis reeds which all were within 15 min drive by car from the hotel.

 Late March 2003 -Summary Birding Field report
There were also 6 Eastern Bonelli's Warblers, Orphean and Ruppell's Warblers hoping around on the ground between the flowers, just to add a touch of the bizarre.
Ralf Kladny reported that the Barred Warbler was still present near clubhouse while 5 Ruppell's Warblers and a relatively late Cyprus Warbler were found in a tiny wadi 3km west of the Kibbutz.
More great birding came from the Samar fields with a Subalpine Warbler (male) and a Savi's Warbler, with the last light of the afternoon spent at Yotvata fields where a Cream-cloured Courser, Rufous Bush Chat, male Rock Thrush, female Pallid Harrier and 6+ Ruppell's Warblers were present amongst hundreds of more common migrants.

Crested Lark, Cyprus Warbler, 3 Crag Martins, 2 Wood Warblers, 2 Eleanora’s Flacons, Kestrel, Spectacled Warbler.
It may be possible to drive along the track with a 4-wheel Drive but we parked in a lay-by further along on the left.
North Cyprus is a good site during migration especially when the weather is overcast with some rain.

The Willow Warbler invariably looks a stronger, bolder bird than the Chiffchaff.
