The Wheatear in the logo on the stamps has been identified as Finsch's Wheatear in my listings - not Cyprus Wheatear as it is probably meant to be.
The Pied Wheatear Oenanthe pleschanka above is scanned from Heinzel, Fitter and Parslow 'The Birds of Britain and Europe', 1972.
To be Cyprus Wheatear the breast and flanks should not be clear white.

As we returned, a Cyprus Wheatear and Serin showed well and a Kingfisher was seen by the bravest of souls peering straight down a vertiginous cliff.
There had obviously been an influx of late-arriving Cyprus Warblers in the scrub, as up to four males chased each other in territorial disputes, at least one female appeared to be feeding young however.
Cyprus Wheatear: Noted on 6 days with 1 on 22nd, 5 on 23rd, c6 on 24th, many en route on 25th, several on 26th, several on 27th - these had been very scarce before we arrived and were clearly arriving in numbers during the week.

I had never visited Cyprus before and, on the basis of a week in Paphos in March, I would strongly recommend it.
The week was rapidly approaching its end, and I had still not seen the two ‘common’ endemic birds Cyprus warbler and wheatear.
After a short while I located two singing Cyprus warblers but it was about an hour before we had some rather distant views of a male Cyprus wheatear, formerly considered to be a distinctive subspecies of pied wheatear.

Cyprus Pied Wheatears are the only white-rumped wheatears which show at least two of the following: a long pale supercilium which droops down behind the ear coverts and continues onto the nape, a dark, almost fl back and rich peach-coloured underparts contrasting neatly with a fl throat.
To confirm that your bird is definitely a Cyprus Pied rather than a Pied Wheatear, check too for the smaller size, shorter primary extension and less white on the back compared with a Pied.
Breeds in almost any area of open ground in Cyprus, especially where there are scattered trees and bushes on which to perch.

 Mourning Wheatear (Oenanthe lugens), Euro Challenge Bird Quiz - Solution of stage 2
The mystery bird for the month of August was identified as a wheatear (Oenanthe sp.) by all our entrants.
The bird was in fact, a juvenile Mourning Wheatear (Oenanthe lugens) and was photographed at Zihor Junction in the southern Negev.
We received a number of entries for Black-eared Wheatear (O. hispanica) 18%, Pied Wheatear (O. pleshanka) 23%, Red-tailed Wheatear (O. xanthopryma) 9%, Desert Wheatear (O. deserti) 7%, Finsch's Wheatear (O. finschii) 2% and Cyprus Wheatear (O. cypriaca) 2%, while the majority and correct answer was for Mourning Wheatear (O. lugens) with 39%.

Butterfly information was supplied by Eddie John and Rob Parker who have both written articles on the Butterflies of the island, most recently in the Amateur Entomologists' Society publication (No 15) entitled "Butterflies of Cyprus 1998" by Eddie John.
The Cyprus grayling, Hipparchia pellucida is only found in a few places in the far east of Europe, but is quite widespread on Cyprus.
