The seed coat consists only of a single layer of cells in Clethraceae like the other families of Ericales; the seed coat is lacking in Cyrillaceae.

In the past, many botanists included a third genus Purdiaea in the family, though recent research has shown this genus is better placed in the closely related family Clethraceae (Anderberg and Zhang 2002).
