 Orchestra
Full size orchestras may sometimes be called "symphony orchestras" or "philharmonic orchestras"; these prefixes do not indicate any difference either to the instrumental content or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different orchestras based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
In ancient Greece the orchestra was the space between the auditorium and the proscenium (or stage), in which were stationed the chorus and the instrumentalistss.
Orchestras are also frequently assembled for use in film scores, as well as using already established orchestras for musical performances.

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (Symphony Orchestra) - Short History
The Philharmonic entered its new 2003-04 season with a new chief conductor, Zdeněk Mácal (born 1936), who at the height of his experience in art and in life is coming to head the orchestra with which he launched his spectacular conducting career from 1966 to 1968.
The CPO's first tour of the United States and Canada was in 1965, on which occasion the triumphal successes of Karel Ančerl assured the orchestra an excellent reputation in the USA which it has maintained to this day in performing Czech music.

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music
The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1894, when the orchestra of the National Theatre, Prague's chief opera house, organized a series of concerts.
Vaclav Talich, its director from 1919 to 1941, brought the Czech Philharmonic into the ranks of Europe's finest, and it was with him that the orchestra made its first recordings.
In 1901 the Czech Philharmonic became an independent orchestra under the conductor-composer Ludvík Celanský.

That is connected with another conflict, as some philharmonic members have negotiated this free post with Czech-born American conductor Zdenek Macal (who should have led the orchestra in Japan) even though it is not their prerogative to do so.
Kovar also announced at the press conference that he was canceling participation at the prestigious Toshiba festival, which selected the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra from a group of five.
Some philharmonic members have asked for Kovar's removal, because of his canceling a contract with the Japanese music agency Musica for their regular tour in Japan.

Vladimir Ashkenazy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1998, he became principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
He often recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; two of these recordings were of the Emperor Concerto by Beethoven, and a number of Rachmaninov pieces (including his Second Concerto).
He has recorded the complete 24 Preludes and Fugues of Shostakovich, and Chopin's entire works for piano.

 The Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra
The Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra is at present one of the leading symphony orchestras in the Czech Republic.
The Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra performs not only works of the classical composers of the 19th and 20th century (B. Smetana, A. Dvorak, L. Janacek, B. Martinu), but also those of the old Czech masters (J. Myslivecek, J.V. Stamic, A. Benda, J.H. Vorisek, A. Rejcha and others).
The Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra played in "Salle de Pleyel" and "Théatre des Champs Elyseés" in Paris, it was also invited to participate in the Jacques Martin TV programme.

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra began work on the recording in September 2003, and released it six months ago.
But this is not the first time the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been around since 1896, has been nominated for a Grammy.

New Statesman: You want to feel Berlin? Visit it. The orchestra just plays music - Berlin, Germany
Certainly, of recent visiting orchestras, the Czechs were the ones with the most distinct national style.
The Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Deustsch Kammerphilharmonie, the Orchestre des Champs Elysees, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe...
The sound, as the orchestra's megalomaniac Intendant hoiked half a dozen more trombones and horns out of nowhere for the climax of Bruckner's Fifth, was not authentic: it offended canons of good taste.

 CPCO
Likewise, within the Czech Philharmonics, a chamber string orchestra emerged, founded by Pavel Prantl in 1977, and continued performing under Petr Skvor since 1980.
Positive responses in professional reviews and the audiences' great appreciation spurred other invitations to the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and its performances could therefore be enjoyed recently by audiences in Turkey, Slovenia, Japan, and again in Germany.
It happens almost regularly that top ranking players in large symphonic orchestras develop a feeling over time that they cannot draw on their own individual talents and capabilities to the full in a large team, and seek self-realization in smaller chamber ensembles.

PROM 58: Prokofiev, Glière & Dvorák, Sergei Nakariakov (flugelhorn), Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Ashkanazy, RAH, 3 September 2001 (CC)
The Czech Philharmonic's sound is a joy: the strings are beautifully full-toned, the wind bucolic and characterful and the brass play with the subtlest use of vibrato and the creamiest of sounds.
Either way, the Czech Philharmonic seemed to enjoy the challenges, and Ashkenazy's detailed knowledge of the score enabled phrases to be dovetailed perfectly.
The music of Dvorák must be the Czech Philharmonic's bread-and-butter.

Guardian Unlimited Arts features A music box city to warm the coldest heart
Two of the three pillars of Czech classical music, Leos Janácek and Antonin Dvorák, are represented at a concert played by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) at its home in the wonderful late-19th-century Rudolfinum, on the banks of the River Vltava.
Paid for direct from the pockets of the Czechs, it is a stunning building crammed with statues and frescoes of Czech heroes and pastoral scenes.
Sitting in a presidential box, sipping the Czech sparkling wine Sekt, and watching the Queen of the Night singing 'The vengeance of Hell is in my heart' is a slice of luxury hard to forget.

 Brno Philharmonic Orchestra
The Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 45th season, is the bearer of a great orchestral tradition, first established through the efforts of the young Leoš Janáèek.
The discography of the orchestra is now, after forty five years of studio work, quite extensive: it reflects, however, a general concentration on 20th century production and on Czech music as a whole, containing the complete symphonic works of several Czech composers including Janacek, Novak and Martinu.
At home the Philharmonic, with its ten annual concert series and with its participation in the Brno International Music Festival, is a pillar of the city´s musical life.

This bonanza of late Romantic Czech piano music includes several items never released on CD, the most important of which are the six Sonatinas of 1919-20.
Gabriela Kaminska (soprano), Olivier Heyte (tenor), Pierre-Yves Pruvot (baritone), Orchestra and Chorus of the Warsaw Chamber Opera; Didier Talpain.
Blazon (1992) is the sort of brassy, brazen work often produced on commission as a curtain-raiser for modern symphony orchestras, brilliantly orchestrated using a large ensemble and with an ear razor-sharp for color and texture.

 Guardian Czech Philharmonic
The programme for the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra's second Prom consisted of a brief survey of the 20th-century French mainstream - music with which we don't usually associate the orchestra, though music director Vladimir Ashkenazy has been keen to introduce it into its repertoire for some time.
Whether the orchestra will ultimately come to be regarded as a major interpreter of French music remains to be seen, for this was an evening of peaks and troughs.
A wildly variable evening, in short - though I doubt whether anyone who heard that performance of Bacchus et Ariane will forget it in a hurry.

The Horn Trio Prague was founded in 1985 by members of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, whose aim it was to promote the Horn as an independent solo and chamber music instrument.
In 1973 he joined the Brno State Philharmonic Orchestra and several years later, in 1979, Zdeněk became a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
A laureate winner of competitions in Munich, Markneukirchen and Prague, Zdeněk combines his present position in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra with a teaching post at the Prague Conservatoire.

Dvorak and his Stabat Mater op. 58 — a Choral Masterpiece
This ended up getting him into the provisional theatre orchestra that later led to the foundation of the new Czech theatre orchestra and it was how he met Wagner when the German composer used that orchestra for a performance of his own works.
Because it was not chic to be Czech, Dvorak was urged to move to Vienna and become a Viennese composer.
There is a series of bare intervals of rising octaves followed by a chromatic descent, reflecting, respectively, the image of Mary looking up to her son on the cross and then, the son looking down on his mother.

DSCH 13 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Mravinsky in Prague
Mravinsky was no stranger to Czech audiences, having presented Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony to great acclaim at the Prague Spring Festival as early as 1947, at the helm of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Regrettably, those first performances were not recorded, but later Prague concerts with his own orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic were preserved for broadcast over Czech Radio.
Set beside the world première recording that Oistrakh made with Dimitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic the previous year, now available on Sony Masterworks Heritage MHK 63327 (reviewed in DSCH 10), this version presents a seemingly less sure-footed soloist, whose tone and rhythm are not always flawless.

Jiri Belohlavek-Founder and Music Director Laureate
A prominent place in Jiri Belohlavek's extensive discography is occupied by recordings of complete orchestral works by Johannes Brahms with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the set of sixteen CDs on Chandos label with mostly Czech music, two of which were awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or prize in Paris.
Jiri Belohlavek's recording of Smetana's My Country with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded the Supraphon Golden Disc in 1995, and in May 1999 the conductor received a further Supraphon Golden Disc for his recordings and promotion of works by Bohuslav Martinu.
The renowned Czech maestro Jiri Belohlavek has been appointed to the role of Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, taking up the position officially at the First Night of the Proms 2006 and holding the title of Chief Conductor Designate until then.
