According to the D'ni cosmology, the Creator Yahvo created the Terokh Jeruth, the Great Tree of Possibilities which has infinite leaves, and each leaf is one Age.
Althought the Ages were 'baptised' according to the characteristics of the islands visited, properly the term 'Age' doesn't refer to the island or limited space the player (or any visitor) has access to, but to the whole universe that place belongs.
Similarly, it is believed that maybe for the D'ni as well, it would be easier to write and describe islands, without needing to bother what might be on the other side of that planet.

Once the face of the mine shaft was measured carefully and determined to be directly underneath the stone walls of the town, the miners would then proceed to excavate a cavern underneath those same walls, working from the face of the mine shaft to expand this cavern in all directions.
As the cavern under the walls would be expanded, the miners would install shoring, consisting of vertical wooden timbers, to support the roof of the cavern so that it would not collapse upon them.
As the cavern would expand, it would resemble a forest on the inside as more and more timbers were erected.

The largest component of the multi-billion dollar Y2K remediation effort was inventory - literally, walking through the vast data center caverns, trying to figure out what each server actually did, and then to determine what risk it posed to the enterprise.
Many information security professionals recognized immediately how critical this inventory effort was, and in many cases, became a key stakeholder in Y2K remediation.
