Britain.tv Wikipedia - New York City Subway
Subway cars (R44s) currently operate on the Staten Island Railway, opened in 1860, but that is not usually considered part of the subway system since it shares no track connections with the subway system and must comply with Federal Railroad Administration standards due to a previous track connection to mainland railroads.
The city was closely involved; every line built for the IRT, and most other lines built or improved for the BRT after 1913, was built by the city and leased to the companies (via the original Contracts 1 and 2 for the IRT subway, and the Dual Contracts for later extensions and widenings).
Cars purchased by the City of New York since the inception of the IND and for the other divisions beginning in 1948 are identified by the letter "R"?title=followed by a number; e.g.: R32.

Good news for Brooklyn-Manhattan subway service - Wired New York Forum
Service can finally be expanded, explained Transit Authority spokesman Charles Seaton, because for the first time since 1986, when the repair work began on the Manhattan Bridge, all four subway tracks over the span will be used.
So a centerpiece of their new plan is allowing both options for riders on the Brighton line during weekdays: either an express B train up Avenue of the Americas, or the local Q up Broadway.
He had ridden the D from the Fort Hamilton Parkway station in Brooklyn, expecting it to stop at 23rd Street, but found himself at 34th Street, one of the most confusing stations in the system after the changes, having to double back.

Disorient Express :: MTA Service Advisories by RSS
New York City's Subway system can be mystifying at times, especially when it seems like certain trains like to suddenly stop running, go a different route or just start skipping stops for no apparent reason.
So after a lot of frustration about never knowing which lines were going to be out when, I figured the only thing to do was to cobble together a system to build RSS and TXT feeds of subway outages.
With some new code under the hood and a mean spirit spurred by getting screwed by the E/V train last weekend, the site and its feeds are now back and kicking.
