  Dudley D. Watkins' Page
The city of Dundee, it is said, was built on "jam, jute and journalism", and the last part of this trinity was embodied by the family firm of D.C. Thomson and Co. Ltd.
Collectively Thomson's weeklies came to be known as the "Big Five", and enjoyed tremendous success - at its peak around 1937, the Wizard reportedly sold about 800,000 copies every week, and a 1940 survey found that the Big Five were more popular than any of their competitors among boys aged between 12 and 14.
During the war, Thomson convinced the authorities that Watkins was too vital an asset for them to lose, and as a result he was excused from any war service which took him away from Dundee.

 Comics UK - Dandy
When D.C. Thomson's, The Dandy Comic, was released on the 4th December 1937, it broke the mould on the way comics were to appear forever more.
Because D.C. Thomson have always been a little bit reluctant to release these details, it is quite annoying that we don't know who were responsible for popular characters like Freddy The Fearless Fly, Hair Oil Hal and many, many others.
The third of the D.C. Thomson funnies from this time, The Magic Comic, which started on the 22nd July 1939, lasted until 25th January 1941 (80 issues).

 Courier News Story
Ron (74) began his journalistic career in newspapers but made his mark in front of the camera at Grampian Television, where his relaxed but authoritative interviewing style was a feature of the company’s broadcasts for a quarter of a century.
A Dundonian born and bred, Ron gained his early experience of journalism with D. Thomson and Co Ltd as a reporter with The Courier and Evening Telegraph.
However, in 1950, the lure of journalism proved too strong and he successfully persuaded D. Thomson and Co Ltd to hire him as a trainee reporter on a probationary basis.

 The Broons
Created and drawn by Dudley D. Watkins, the strip made its first appearance in the issue dated 8 March 1936.
However, the current writer said in a BBC Scotland documentary aired in 2005 that despite their Dundonian roots, the home town was always meant to represent Glasgow.
For five years after Watkins' death, D.C. Thomson recycled old strips in the newspaper and annuals, fearing no adequate replacement could be found to match Watkins' unique style.

 Other Books - Bibliography
The scripting of Thomson's editorial team and Watkins' artwork of this era, on the Broons in particular, was wonderful, funny and touching and takes the comic strip beyond mere cartooning.
The vast majority of strips are from the 1930's and 1940's (DC Thomson probably had a surplus of strips during the war years when no annuals were printed).
I understand D.C. Thomson were very upset about this article and suspect George Rosie was struck from the company christmas card list soon after this.
