Topic: The D0 Experiment

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

  Mark Strovink
After the discovery in 1995 by CDF and D0 of the top quark, we measured its mass with a combined 3% error, yielding (with other inputs) a stringent test of loop corrections to the Standard Model and an early hint that the Higgs boson is light.
While studying data from the 1992-1996 CDF and D0 samples that contain both an electron and a muon, we became aware of three events that cannot easily be attributed either to top quark decay or to backgrounds.
Generally this is because the transverse momenta of the leptons (electrons, muons, and neutrinos as inferred from transverse momentum imbalance) are unexpectedly large.

The D0 experiment is a research instrument, which is made available to you as a graduate student when you join the experiment.
D0 is a large and complex experiment, but it does not need to be intimidating.
Unfortunately, this pitfall is not rare in D0; I consider avoiding it to be one of the major challenges facing the D0 physics groups.

Within the D0 collaboration similar facilities will be operational in Prague, Lyon, Lancaster, Texas and we can profit greatly of this experience and we shall be able to take a significant fraction of the required system software from Fermilab.
D0 and Fermilab are currently testing tape media for data import/export between Fermilab and the collaborating institutes and universities.
Based on this experience we should then define the parameters of the final farm and should have a detailed specification on what has to be purchased, so negotiations with the PC makers can start about prices and delivery times.

To maintain good standing after the initial year (that is, to remain an active author), all scientists on the experiment are expected to continue to contribute the major fraction of their research time to DZero (but, again, at least 12 hours per week) in any of the areas described in the items (a)-(g).
For major conferences where abstracts and/or conference proceedings are required, a member of D0 will be appointed by the spokesperson to see that the abstracts and/or papers are written in a timely manner and coordinate the submission of the D0 abstracts to the conference.
The only one that the D0 Speakers Bureau has to advise and approve is the Fermilab Wine and Cheese, which is special because that is where new D0 results are presented to the general physics community.

A year later, and using the same data as before, the D0 scientists have re-optimized their analysis by expanding their search to additional top-decay modes and by better understanding possible background phenomena.
The D0 co-spokesmen, Paul Grannis and Hugh Montgomery, caution that this analysis does not yet demonstrate the existence of the top quark.
Using data from run Ia (Aug. '92--Jun. '93) and a preliminary analysis of partial data from run Ib (1994-95), the D0 inventory now consists of 18 candidate events with an expected background of 8.2, still short of what they feel is needed for a significant demonstration of a top signal.
