D1 (Sony) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
D1 was notoriously expensive and the equipment required very large infrastructure changes in facilities which upgraded to this format.
Early D1 operations were plagued with difficulties, though the format quickly stabilized and was renowned for its superlative image quality.
D1 is still in some usage as of 2003, and many of the technologies introduced with this format are still common to more recent digital videotape formats.

D1 is the only online recruiting/evaluation service that includes extensive video in its standard profile for athletes.
D1 saves athletes money by allowing them to send in video to D1 that is then accessible to all coaches and can be emailed out by athletes.
D1 allows the student-athlete to control the recruiting process rather than be controlled by it.

Unfortunately, D1 is also notable for a learning curve that will be prohibitive to all but the most devoted virtual drifter, and even then, there are enough presentation problems to rule this game out for casual and dedicated racing fans alike.
What sets D1 apart is its single-minded devotion to drifting, not just as a neat way to maneuver a car around a race course, but also as a means of competition.
In D1 races, it doesn't matter who crosses the finish line first; the quality and quantity of your drifting is what will earn you wins.

When you mount a lens on the D1, the effective focal length is increased by about 1.5x (e.g., a 20mm lens shows the same angle of view as a 30mm lens would on a 35mm body; note that the 1.5x is a rounded figure, the actual increase is slightly more).
The CCD sensor the D1 uses is unique to the D1 (i.e., it's not one of the Sony-produced megapixel sensors that virtually all the consumer digital cameras use).
The banding noise doesn't appear in the recent D1 I've used, and owners who've complained about it to Nikon and had their D1 serviced seemed to have oscillators replaced in the camera, which mostly fixes the problem (at high ISO values, there is still a faint pattern to the noise).

I used the antifog eyepiece DK-14 on D1 and albeit this device does prevent fogging, it also scratches easily to impair viewing of the groundglass when the camera is used in adverse light conditions.
Evidently, the tonal adjustment of which D1 is capable, brings with it a higher level of exposure accuracy in the digital images.
That was the last hindrance to my embracing the D1 for all kinds of assignments, and I had the impression the camera simply purred of reassuring pleasure.

Indeed, most of the D1 series features are derived from either the F5 or the F100 bodies (curiously, the D1 is described by Nikon as having the F100's viewfinder, though it includes the F5's 1005-pixel color CCD for exposure and white balance calculations).
The CCD sensors the D1 models use are unique to Nikon The D1 and D1h consist of a 2012 x 1324 array, and it has massive 11.8 micron photosites.
The banding noise doesn't appear in the recent original D1 I've used, and owners who've complained about it to Nikon and had their D1 serviced seemed to have oscillators replaced in their cameras, which mostly fixes the problem (at high ISO values, there is still a faint pattern to the noise, though).

Nikon D1 Digital Camera Review: Optics
One important note about Nikkor optics on the D1: With linear dimensions of 15.6 x 23.7 mm, the CCD in the D1 is a fair bit smaller than a 35mm film frame.
Thus, the D1 is essentially cropping into the central area of the normal 35mm field of view that any given lens would have.
The D1 was apparently part of the reason that Nikon came out with the 17-35mm zoom lens that we used in much of our testing of the camera: On the D1, this lens effectively translates into a 25.5 to 52.5mm, providing moderate (rather than extreme) wide angle coverage.

The Nikon D1 is a good digital camera for photographers who want creative control and are already invested in the Nikon F lens system.
Of the three, the D1 and S1 were far more accurate in color and in resolution compared to the D30 from canon, which was further proved by pop photography's lab tests of the three cameras.
The 12-bit to 8-bit mapping on the D1 is smart enough to be able to keep the shadows (it has more bits to work with at the low end of its range) even though it has problems in that case with the highlights.

Work with non-square pixels (D1, DV) in After Effects (4.0-6.5) - Support Knowledgebase   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Editing DV or D1 source footage accurately in Adobe After Effects can be challenging because DV and D1 footage consists of non-square pixels while computer monitors use square pixels to display images; this difference often causes DV and D1 footage to appear stretched on computer monitors.
Because DV and D1 are international standards, you can use them with video formats for both NTSC (the broadcast standard in the United States and Japan) and PAL (the broadcast standard in Europe).
DV and D1 are composed of rectangular (that is, non-square) pixels, instead of the square pixels for most Mac OS and Windows systems.

You may notice that the D1 images appear a little less contrasty than images from consumer cameras as a result, but they are more accurate and contain much more shadow detail.
Of course, one of the main attractions regarding the D1 is the ability to use any of the huge variety of available 35mm lenses in the Nikkor D type format.
