IS Video - Video FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
D2 is not a pure digital format, as the inputs and outputs are standard analog composite ports.
The Type C format replaced the 2 inch "Quad" systems as the premium standard of the time because it was the first to offer many of the features in a videotape format that we currently take for granted, such as: viewable still-frames, slow and fast motion, and picture in shuttle.
The DV format compresses the video signal at a rate of 5:1, and the ratio of samled data are 4:1:1, which allocates 4 parts of the sample to the fl-and-white data (luminance) of the component signal, and 1 part each for both of the color portions (chrominance) of the sample of the component signal.

''D2''' is a professional digital video format, created as a lower-cost alternative to D1.
The format still used no digital compression, but saved bandwidth and other costs by sampling a fully encoded NTSC or PAL composite video signal and storing that directly on to tape, rather than sampling component video.
In it's time the D2 was the fastest computer in Europe.

Video FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
At this time serving video content on the Internet is still a relatively labor intensive task and requires a considerable amount of resources (in terms of disk space and time) on both the server side of the equation and the client side as well.
First video material that is going to be served on the Internet needs to be digitized (or if it is already in digital form then it only needs to be transferred) to a digital video workstation for processing.
Second, the digital video file will need to be compressed and encoded to make it manageable on the Internet from both a file size perspective and from the perspective of digital video formats supported by the range of Internet video servers.

Clock generation circuit for multistandard serial digital video with automatic format identification - Patent 5111160
Automatic identification of which serial digital video is present is accomplished by having the clock generator produce a clock signal at the frequency required by one of the video formats while a phase lock loop attempts to lock onto the incoming signals at that frequency.
A clock generator is made to produce a clock signal at the frequency required by one of the video formats, and a phase lock loop attempts to lock onto the incoming signals at that frequency.
Valid video detector 80 is required when the clock generation circuitry is used this way, since locking on a harmonic of an incorrect frequency is more likely when it is not known where in the sequence of video standards the circuitry will be when the incoming video first appears.

 Video Formats Compared
However, now that video quality has become a concern among both hobbyists and professionals alike, and there is such a fine line between consumer and broadcast formats, we are now faced with making a decision between as many as ten different styles of video tapes.
Add to these the expensive digital formats like D1, D2, D3 and D5 (there is no “D4”; because the number four is an unlucky Japanese numerical value), and you have at least fourteen separate video formats from which to select.
The reason this is generally true is not because of the actual video format, but rather the camera that they’re shooting it in.

In digital it is similar, but tape "format" concerns have been replaced with concerns for the digital format--the resolution of the video signal itself.
As with analog, a format is chosen based upon the quality required; but today, producers have to be concerned with not just the how a program will look now, but if the quality of that program will be high enough for that program to continue to be an asset years down the road.
