Trams in Melbourne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soon a Melbourne cable tramway system was running from the city to nearby suburbs, but as the city grew the technical limits of the cable tram system became apparent, and electric trams were developed for lines to more distant suburbs.
Melbourne resisted the trend, partly because Melbourne's wide streets and geometric street pattern makes trams more practicable than in many other cities, partly because of resistance from the unions, and partly because the Chairman of the MMTB, Sir Robert Risson, successfully argued that the cost of ripping up the concrete-embedded tram tracks would be prohibitive.
The B-class trams (also known as light rail vehicles) were first introduced to Melbourne in 1984 with the prototype B1 class trams, which were a significant improvement over the Z1-classes.

In the "golden era" of the 1920s and 1930s, loadings were heavy, a tram conductor earned more than a schoolteacher or a policeman, and the slightest scratch or spot of dirt on the rolling stock was dealt with immediately.
After World War II other Australian cities began to replace their trams with buses, and by the 1960s Melbourne was the only Australian city with a major tram network (there is one tramline in Adelaide, and there are also trams in Bendigo).

Melbourne is one of the lowest-density cities in the world and continues to extend its boundaries as its population grows.
These demands range from handling arrivals and departures at Melbourne airport and transporting visitors to the city; moving the Games’ family (athletes, support staff and officials) and other visitors between accommodation and venues; providing for large numbers of spectators simultaneously moving to and from events running concurrently.
In addition, Melbourne has the experience of staging major sporting events that require moving large numbers of spectators to and from venues, such as the Grand Prix.

Those who follow the tram scene on www.vicsig.net would know over the past several months that many of the original YT liveried (mk1 livery) B class trams have been repainted into the later YT livery (mk2 livery) like the C class.
Basically, the Combino trams will require inspection of their structure at 120,000kms after it was discovered earlier this year that a Combino that has covered more than 120,000kms could suffer unexpected structural collapse in an accident.
If during the inspections a tram is found to have faulty structure, the tram will either need to be rebuilt from the ground up (in Germany) or modifications will need to be made to the articulated joint to take stress off the structure (either in Melbourne or Germany).

 Selective Vehicle Priority Methods
On detection of a tram approaching a junction, priority phases can be called to either clear the queue ahead of the tram or to provide a phase extension.
Trams in the German city of Duisburg are given priority at signals (Lange and Lenzen, 1997) using a system based on roadside beacons and infrared communications.
When the tram reaches certain positions it sends a message to the signal controller which is then able to calculate an optimal intervention which gives priority to the tram and minimises the resulting loss in green time to other traffic.

D1 stored uncompressed digitized component video, encoded at YUV 4:2:2 using the CCIR 601 raster format, along with PCM audio tracks as well as timecode on a 19mm (3/4") cassette tape.
Uncompressed component video uses enormous bandwidth, and a simpler D2 system soon followed.
D1 was notoriously expensive and the equipment required very large infrastructure changes in facilities which upgraded to this format.
